THIS IS A WORLD PREMIERE

SYNOPSIS: The eighth winner of the Alliance Theatre’s Kendeda National Graduate Playwright Competition collides the rapidly-changing setting of modern Moscow with the darkly funny world of traditional Russian fairy tales. 20-year-old Annie, who left the collapsing Soviet Union for American shores as a baby, has just been sent back to the city of her birth for the summer to stay with her aunt, a woman who acts an awful lot like the girl-eating witch, Baba Yaga. There, she meets the two Katyas, the tragic Masha, whose boyfriend has recently turned into a bear, and a fairy godmother prostitute named Nastya—and the adventures begin. When the lines between reality and fairy tale start to blur, then vanish, things get seriously dicey. A highly theatrical tour de force!

Katya :

Caucasian female, early, 20s, of Russian descent. She is young and very beautiful. Sharp in every way, she has a shrewd head for business and a slim, angular body. She is always dressed expensively. Relationships with men are always a means to an end, but she is not an Anna Nicole Smith-style gold-digger; she is quiet and calculating and very, very pragmatic. However, she is kind and supportive to her high-school friend MASHA. Katya knows what she is—a woman using sex for material gain,

Olga/ Passport Control Officer/ Professor/ Valentina:

Caucasian female, 40s, of Russian descent. A good looking actress with sex appeal and the ability to play multiple roles. (one actress plays all four roles)

  • Olga: Annie’s mother, a vivacious, dominant presence in Annie’s life. She is very appearance conscious: She is spray-tanned and always made-up (I think she has tattooed-on lip liner). It has always been a point of pride that people never believe she is old enough to be Annie’s mother. She speaks with a Russian accent.

  • Passport Control Officer: Wears a uniform that looks like what flight attendants wore fifty years ago. She wields what power she can in her little booth, giving disapproving looks, typing slowly, and asking people to repeatedly remove hats and glasses just to mess with them. If she never saw another foreigner again it wouldn’t be soon enough.

  • Professor: Teaches Russian as a foreign language and Business Russian at the state university. She wishes the last thirty years were a bad dream from which she could wake. She wears clothing from the 1980s to be ready in case that is true. She longs for the time when “everything worth anything cost nothing”. There is a romance to her sad, sweeping hand gestures.

  • Valentina: Is the Tsar’s wife and the OTHER Katya’s mother. She wears expensive black designer clothes (reinforcing Katya’s vision of her as “a wicked witch”). Competitive and controlling, Vanentina is a woman in crisis when the play begins, panicked that she is losing control of her husband and daughter. She did not marry for love and may not have been unlike (pragmatic, coolly attractive) Katya herself 20 years earlier. Now, she is having wild mood swings and is somewhat unnatural looking (Botox and fillers in her lips and cheeks plus whatever else)…
