SEEKING:
Franco Wicks:
African American Male, 21. Bright, charismatic young man forced to drop out of college because of financial need, which forces him to get a job at the donut shop. He has a gambling problem like his father and secretly owes his bookie a lot of money. Franco has written a complete novel, long-hand in various notebooks, which Arthur reads and deems terrific. He is very proud of it. He is full of the energy of what “could be,” despite his tough situation.
Max Tarasov:
Russian Male, 49. Russian accent. Has been running a DVD store next to the donut shop for eleven years and desperately wants to buy the donut shop in order to expand. He is currently remodeling his store with a group of newly arrived Russian immigrant men. He has a sharp, old country wit, and speaks his mind. Actor must be careful not to play strictly for laughs, as Max is an ambitious entrepreneur who is following the American Dream. Actor under 5’10” preferred.
Officer Randy Osteen:
Caucasian Female, 49. Irish American, an unmarried female cop in a family of all brothers who are cops. She combines macho bluster with a deep affection for Arthur Przybyszewski. Her attempts at communicating with the uncommunicative Arthur provide the romantic arc of the play. She is almost always with her partner, Officer James Bailey, walking the beat. Actor over 5’5” preferred.
Officer James Bailey:
African American Male, 43. A married cop intent on developing neighborhood relationships that assist his policing. He cares about the people in his district, and about being a good cop. He and his wife are Star Trek fans and attend those conventions. He is almost always with his partner, Officer Randy Osteen, walking the beat.
Luther Flynn:
Caucasian Male, 45. Irish/Italian American, a longtime bookie who uses a certain amount of charm to keep his clients gambling, but who can be violent when necessary. He suffers from an acute ulcer, which has him drinking milk as a remedy. Luther is forced to engage in a long and bloody fistfight with Arthur toward the end of the play that is the cathartic climax for Arthur. Actor must be at least 6ft tall and have stage combat experience.
Kevin Magee:
Caucasian Male, 28. Irish American, the right-hand man of the bookie, Luther Flynn. He provides the intimidation and “muscle” for those who are in arrears paying off their gambling debt – such as Franco. Actor must be at least 6ft tall.
Kiril Ivakin:
Russian Male, early 30s. Speaks only Russian. Actor must be at least 6’4” and broadly built. Newly immigrated to America to help renovate his Uncle Max’s DVD store. He is a huge man who is used as a deterrent when Arthur fights Luther.
