BREAKDOWN
Nya’s son, Omari, is tormented with rage and in trouble at school. A fractured family navigates a broken system as a mother fights for her son’s future in a world divided by race, class and money. Compassion and eloquence galvanize this gritty new work by one of America’s most sought-after playwrights.
Seeking
NYA (Female, mid 30s-mid 40s) African American. She is a single mother, trying to raise her teenage son on her own with much difficulty. She teaches public high school. She is a good teacher, inspiring her students in a stressed environment. She is also a struggling parent doing her damndest. She is strong but burning out. A smoker and sometimes drinker. She is holding on by a thread.
OMARI (Male, 18+ to play late teens). African American. Nya’s son. He is smart and astute but filled with rage without release. He is tender and honest at his core; there is something profoundly sensitive amidst his anger. He is wrestling with his identity between private school education and being from a so-called urban community.
XAVIER (Male, mid 30s-mid 40s). African American. He is a single father struggling to connect to his son, Omari. He is a marketing exec and financially stable, but he is emotionally impoverished. He has a wounded relationship with his ex-wife, Nya.
DUN (Male, early-mid 30s). African American. A public high school security guard. He is fit and optimistic, and charismatic with women. He is genuine and thoughtful, trying to be a gentleman in a stressed environment; it's not easy.
