PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK is a non-traditional melting pot of pop, classical, and traditional musical theater influences ranging from Kate Bush to Sondheim to Meredith Monk.
Please prepare a brief folk, pop or contemporary musical theatre song that shows range. Bring sheet music in the correct key and a hardcopy headshot/resume.

MRS. APPLEYARD – 50s-60s. Headmistress, English, a widow. A self-made woman in a man’s world. Confides in Miss McCraw, daunted by no one but Miranda, she becomes fixated on Sara. Vocal range: A3-E5.
MISS MCCRAW – 60s. Maths teacher, Scottish, single. Rational, curious, occasionally oblivious. Connects with Marion, in whom she sees traces of her younger self. Vocal range: D4-E5.
MADEMOISELLE – 20s. Teaches French. Engaged to be married. Warm, sensitive, shares a bond with Irma. Vocal range: B3-E5.
MIRANDA – 18+ to play late teens. A rangy country girl with a calm fearlessness. Best friends with Marion and Irma. Vocal range: A3-E5 for the majority of the score, pop yodel to A5.
IRMA – 18+ to play late teens. Flirtatious, playful, an heiress who enjoys life to the full. Best friends with Miranda and Marion. Vocal range: Gb3-G5.
MARION – 18+ to play late teens. Blunt, brilliant, ambitious with an edge of rage. Best friends with Irma and Miranda.
SARA – 18+ to play early teens. The youngest. Awkward, lonely, passionate. Worships Miranda. She is Albert’s sister. Vocal range: A3-F5.
EDITH – 18+ to play early teens. Anxious to be accepted, she distances herself from Sara and curries favour with the seniors. Vocal range: Mixed belt to F#5.
BLANCHE – 18+ to play early teens. The class clown. Aspires to the music hall stage. Friends with Fanny and Rosamund.
FANNY – 18+ to play early teens. A drama queen, brimming with energy. Friends with Rosamund and Blanche.
ROSAMUND – 18+ to play early teens. An earnest do-gooder. Wants to be a missionary. Friends with Fanny and Blanche.
ALBERT (ROLE IS CAST.) – Early 20s. An Indigenous tracker far from home. Watchful, generous, a dry sense of humour. He forms a tentative friendship with Michael, and is brother to Sara.
MICHAEL – Early 20s. A gentleman, newly arrived from England. Assured in his position, but curious. He becomes fascinated by Miranda, and forms a connection with Albert. Baritenor.
TEACHERS UNDERSTUDY – 30s-50s, to cover Mrs. Appleyard, Miss McCraw, and Mademoiselle. This is an offstage understudy.
SCHOOL GIRLS UNDERSTUDY – 18+ to play teens, will cover the Junior and Senior School Girls. This is an offstage understudy.
MALE UNDERSTUDY – 20s, to cover Albert and Michael. This is an offstage understudy.
