BREAKDOWN

OUD PLAYER ON THE TEL

SYNOPSIS: Inspired by Fiddler on the Roof, Oud Player On The Tel uses humor and forensic history to tell the story of both sides’ experiences around the founding of Israel. This sensitive account looks at the story from both sides’ perspective, as well as being highly sensitive to the story of Palestinian displacement, offering nuance and understanding in a situation where it is desperately needed.

Storyline: A family of Jewish refugees finds themselves in the village of Bayt Jiz. The father, Melke, befriends the village Sufi, Amir, and finds joy in his new life as an olive farmer. His son, Mortiz, finds himself in direct competition with the Sufi’s nephew, Mahmud, as they have similar but very different visions for the future of Bayt Jiz. Meanwhile, Mortiz falls in love with Mahmud’s sister, Rashida, while the mothers, Fatima and Shoshana, try to help their families see what is really happening as the refugees take ownership of the village and attempt to establish their home in the Eretz.

SEEKING:

Amir: Age - 50+. Ethnicity - Arabic/Middle-eastern. Palestinian-Muslim olive farmer whose family has lived in Bayt Jiz “as long as anyone can remember.” He is a Sufi, and considered a village elder, though has no official position in town.

Mahmud: Age - 18-30. Ethnicity - Arabic/Middle-eastern. Amir’s nephew. The only one in the village ever to travel outside of Palestine. He went to Paris and read American newspapers. He is a believer in his Islamic upbringing and also hopes to introduce some “Western” ideas to his people.

Fatima: Age - 45+. Ethnicity - Arabic/Middle-eastern. Amir’s sister and mother of Mahmud and Rashida. A loyal, motherly figure to the village.

Rashida: Age - 18-25. Ethnicity - Arabic/Middle-eastern. Amir’s niece, Fatima’s daughter, Mahmud’s sister. Falls in love with Moritz and agrees to convert to Judaism.

Melke: Age - 45+. Ethnicity - Jewish, of European descent. A Jewish refugee from eastern Germany who has emigrated to the Holy Land after having passed the Shoah in Switzerland. He was a tailor back in the old country and is now learning to grow olives as he tries to find a new life in Bayt Jiz.

Moritz: Age - 18-30. Ethnicity - (Ashkenazi) Jewish, of European descent. Melke’s son and a Jewish refugee; named after Moritz, Switzerland, where his family emigrated in 1935. Romantic and idealistic, he becomes a leader of his people in their efforts to make Bayt Jiz their home.

Shoshana: Age - 45+. Ethnicity - (Ashkenazi) Jewish, of European descent. Melke’s wife and Mortiz’s mother. She is an advocate for her people in the pursuit to make Bayt Jiz a permanent home.
