BREAKDOWN

ONCE ON THIS ISLAND

SEEKING:

TI MOUNE:

Black; female, age 18–30. Our story’s courageous protagonist. An adopted peasant girl filled with wonder, curiosity, and romantic idealism. Brave, intuitive, and full of heart, she believes that love can conquer death — and sets out to prove it. Strong high belt. Exceptional dancer. Carries both innocence and deep emotional range.

MAMA EURALIE:

Black; female, age 35–50. Ti Moune’s adoptive mother. Wise, cautious, and deeply loving. Protective and grounded, she fears for her daughter’s safety and tries to shield her from heartbreak. Warm mezzo-soprano. Strong with maternal presence.

TONTON JULIAN:

Black; male, age 35–50. Ti Moune’s adoptive father. Gentle, generous, and full of hope. He encourages Ti Moune’s dreams and believes in the goodness of the world. Baritone. Moves well.

ASAKA:

Black; female-identifying, trans, queer, or gender non-conforming; age 25–50. Mother of the Earth. Vibrant, nurturing, and abundant — Asaka laughs easily and brings joy wherever she goes. Big, joyful voice — gospel/rock feel. Confident physical presence. Strong mover.

AGWE:

Black; any gender identity, age 25–50. God of Water. Commanding and mercurial, Agwe delights in the power and unpredictability of the ocean. Strong vocals; strong mover. Should convey power and mischief.

ERZULIE:

Black; female-identifying, trans, queer, or gender non-conforming; age 25–50. Goddess of Love. Graceful, wise, and endlessly compassionate. Erzulie believes love is the most powerful force in the world. Strong vocals. Exudes warmth and inner strength. Strong mover.

PAPA GE:

Black; any gender identity, age 25–50. Demon of Death. Sinister, seductive, and sharp-witted. Papa Ge thrives on manipulation and relishes in bargaining with fate. Strong vocals; strong mover. Magnetic stage presence.

DANIEL:

Black or mixed heritage; male, age 20–30. A privileged young man from the island’s upper class. The youngest descendant of the Beauxhommes — a family that lives on the wealthier side of the island, historically benefiting from colonialism and colorism. He is kind-hearted but bound by duty and torn between love and legacy. Bari-tenor. Balances charm with inner conflict.

ANDREA:

Black or mixed heritage; female, age 20–30. Daniel’s elegant, “proper” fiancée. Polished and polite, but emotionally cold. Her refined manners conceal a deep sense of judgment. Considered an “appropriate” match for Daniel given her social standing and the island’s entrenched values around colorism and class. Mezzo soprano. Understated but commanding. Strong dancer.

ARMAND:

Black or mixed heritage; male, age 30–50. The original patriarch of the Beauxhommes, a family of wealth and privilege on one side of the island, historically benefiting from colonialism and colorism. He is ambitious, entitled, and dismissive of the island’s peasants — a representation of generational class divide and inherited power. Strong singer. Strong mover.
