BREAKDOWN

NOTE FROM DIRECTOR: Please note we are looking to cast this ethnically diverse, so ALL are encouraged to audition for ALL roles; we TRULY mean this. Please do not type yourself out! Also, and more importantly, we are looking for actors who will help breathe fresh and exciting life into this show. We are NOT looking to do what has been done time and time again. We are looking for people not afraid to break the mold here. This show has a love story as a basic through line, but is also about the building of America and the uniting of people with different backgrounds. Oklahoma sat on top of Mexico at the time it entered the union and with the railroad being built and everyone moving out west there was more of a diverse population than this musical has traditionally depicted. The stuff this show has at its core is actually very timely and we will want to dig as far as we can into those layers and themes.

Clogging/tapping, and any type of rodeo tricks are a plus for all actors.

LAUREY: Any ethnicity. Female to play 18-25 (Lyric Soprano) She is a farmer’s daughter and is feisty, independent, and strong. Not a girlie girl, she is very much a tomboy. She has an air of knowledge about her; she has lived through the death of her parents and has a big wall up. She lives with her Aunt Eller on a ranch that she helps work and maintain. She is in love with Curly, though she will not admit it. Someone like this would be tough and no nonsense. Big plus if actor can do the dream ballet, but not a requirement.

CURLY: Any ethnicity. Male to play 20-35 (Baritone) Should have a beautiful and booming baritone voice. Has a confident swagger and is the most handsome man in the whole county. A cowboy with an expansive, charismatic personality and a sense of humor. He is prideful. He is in love with Laurey, but refuses to admit it first. His heart is in the right place, but doesn't always make the best choices when he is trying to get what he wants. Big plus if actor can do the dream ballet.

AUNT ELLER: Female to play 40-60 (Mezzo-Soprano) She acts as the town’s aunt, and knows how to take care of herself. She’s motherly when she needs to be, but also tough as nails. She owns a ranch and works it with her niece, Laurey, and a hired hand, Jud. Looking for an actor with a dry sense of humor and also a great sense of warmth about her. She should move well; a dancer is a plus.

WILL PARKER: Any ethnicity. Male to play 20-35 (Tenor) Will is a handsome and hapless young cowboy who is skilled enough to compete in rodeos. He is interested in Ado Annie. He has a pleasant happy-go-lucky disposition, but needs to assert himself strongly to get her full attention. Must be a strong and funny actor with great comedic timing. Will is a dance role. Being able to do rope tricks is a plus, but must be willing to learn.

JUD FRY: Any ethnicity. Male to play 25-40 (Baritone) Described as dark and brooding by others, Jud takes care of the ranch Laurey and Aunt Eller live on. Jud does not fit in with the society he lives with, he is seen by most as an outsider and his quiet and gruff demeanor might be misunderstood. More socially awkward than mean. He has feelings for Laurey. He works hard to take care of the ranch for Laurey and Aunt Eller. Looking for a very strong actor that can make the character more sympathetic and less of a villain. His darkness comes from his constant rejection and social isolation. He battles some inner demons, but at his core he just wants what everyone else wants; to be loved.

ADO ANNIE: Any ethnicity. Female to play 18-30 (Mezzo-Soprano, belter) Andrew Carnes’ daughter, she “Can’t Say No” to anyone. She should be very attractive. She wants everyone to be happy. Her heart is always in the right place, but she isn’t always the best judge of character. A comic, romantic lead, she is wooed by Ali Hakim, but deep down she feels a connection to Will parker. Looking for a sexy (sexy comes in all shapes and sizes) and quirky COMEDIENNE. Should have her own unique style and sense of comedy. Needs to move well, a dancer is a plus.

ALI HAKIM: Any ethnicity. Male to play 25-45 Traveling peddler and shrewd salesman who says he’s from Persia (present day Iran). Though we aren’t sure how much of what he says we can believe; might be from New Jersey for all we know. He, like Jud, is an outsider to this community but not feared by most. He has a huge personality. He likes pretty things and women. He pursues Ado Annie and Gertie Cummings. His accent should be comical. Looking for a gifted actor with strong comedic chops. Moves well is a plus. Hat tricks, slight of hand tricks are a plus. Should be very slick with the ladies; a true snake oil salesman.

GERTIE CUMMINGS: Any ethnicity. Female to play 18-35 (Soprano). From the next town over, she has eyes on Curly and isn’t waiting around for Laurey to say no to him. Another flirt whose presence is always announced by her ear-piercing laugh. Like Annie, she just wants to get married to someone. Strikingly beautiful comic character with a supremely annoying giggle. Must move well, a dancer is a plus.

JUDGE ANDREW CARNES: Any ethnicity. Male to play 40-60 (Baritone but vocally closer to tenor). He is very protective of his daughter, Ado Annie. He doesn’t want Will Parker to marry her because he believes the cowboy’s life to be risky and unreliable. He is a rancher, and doesn’t feel very kind to cowboys in general. Most days, he looks at the world down the barrel of his shotgun. Comedy skills a plus, but comes from a very real place. Moves well.

DREAM CURLY: Male Dancer to play 20-35 He must be able to act well and dance the lead in a ballet. Should resemble Curly in Laurey’s dream ballet; handsome, well built. Will double in ensemble. If the leading roles are cast with the ability to dance this on their own then we will not cast this role.

DREAM LAUREY: Female Dancer to play 18-25 She must be able to act well and dance the lead in a ballet. Should resemble the actress playing Laurey. Will double in the ensemble. If the leading roles are cast with the ability to dance this on their own then we will not cast this role.

People with stage combat experience/training is a plus. People with rope or gun tricks are a plus. Any other unique skill that might be applicable to this show should be indicated on your audition form.

Also, we would love to cast men and women than could also play on an onstage band for parts of the show. Anyone that is proficient in fiddle, guitar, banjo, harmonica, or other bluegrass type instruments should bring theirs to their initial audition.

ENSEMBLE SINGERS: Ages 20’s – 60’s. All vocal ranges needed; gorgeous legit high tenors and sopranos to rich altos and bass/baritones. We are looking for performers of all types, ages, and ethnicities. Male and female ensemble singers who move extremely well and are strong, great actors/smart performers. Singers must move well, not everyone must dance. We are looking for people that can create real characters from nothing and be ready to dive into creating this world.

ENSEMBLE DANCERS: Ages 20’s – 60’s. All vocal ranges needed. Male and female trained dancers with excellentballet technique who sing. Clogging/tapping skills are a plus. Also possibly looking for guys who tumble. We are looking for performers of all types, ages, and ethnicities. Must sing well and hold their own harmony. We are looking for people that can create real characters from nothing and be ready to dive into creating this world. We want smart actors that can dance extremely well and sing.

YOUTH ENSEMBLE: Ages 5-17 years old. All kids cast in the youth ensemble must be strong dancers and also sing. Proficient in ballet with experience in clogging and traditional music theatre dance is a plus.
