BREAKDOWN

ABOUT
On a college campus a student and a creative writing teacher face off during her office hour. She is determined to find the cause of her student’s apparent anger and unhappiness. He has been behaving bizarrely and inexplicably in class; he sits silently at the back of the classroom, exuding malevolence and intimidating both his fellow students an instructors. His writing assignments are violent, ugly and artless. Could he be disturbed or even dangerous? Or is he a frightened and lost young man asking for help?

[GINA]
Korean-American. 30 - 40. A creative writing professor, who uses teaching as an outlet for her own creativity, Gina finds herself ambivalent about her own writing/process. When faced with Dennis, a troubled/troubling and potentially dangerous student, Gina, unlike her colleagues, does not reject him. Determined and dedicated, Gina approaches Dennis with rigorous empathy and encourages him to open up.

[DENNIS]
Korean-American. Actors 18+ to play a college freshman. An awkward outsider who is ostracized by his peers and most teachers. Vulnerable and odd, Dennis has discovered the power of silence and relishes how unsettling it is to others, yet he doesn’t fully understand how unsettling/threatening he is to them. On the surface he could resemble a member of the trench coat mafia – acne, baseball cap, crippling shyness and insecurity. He funnels in rage into his writing, which is shockingly violent and deeply disturbing to professors and students alike. When he finally engages with Gina, he is surprisingly empathetic. Seeking a physically adept actor who is expressive and compelling even when not speaking.

[DAVID]
Caucasian. 30s. Hipster screenwriting/playwriting professor used to affection and attention from his students. As soon as he sells his first pilot David plans to bid academia adieu. He is angry that Dennis has disrupted his usually chill class and dismisses Dennis’ poor and offensive writing without wanting to understand Dennis’ behavior. Not without compassion, David sees a kid who is troubled, not a troubled kid.

[GENEVIEVE]
Her race should be different and distinct from the three roles listed above. Early 30s. Compassionate and well-meaning poetry teacher who initially endeavors to strategize how best to address a student as disturbing/disruptive as Dennis, but ultimately does not succeed. Frustrated, angry and spent after having Dennis as a student Genevieve welcomes the fact that Dennis is now Gina’s problem.
