BREAKDOWN

NIGHT OF THE IGUANA

SYNOPSIS:

A defrocked clergyman encounters inside disturbances amid outside disturbances during one stormy night at a Mexican inn as the world prepares for World War II. The recently widowed innkeeper competes for his attention with a teenaged girl and an artist traveling with her grandfather, the oldest living poet. But, at the end of the stormy night, they all reach an understanding of one another that allows their lives to leap dramatically forward.

SEEKING:

PANCHO (Male, 18 - very early 20’s, Mexican). He is a wandering unmotivated soul with a lack of common sense compared to hardworking PEDRO. One of Maxine Faulk's employees at the Costa Verde Hotel. Able to speak in a Mexican dialect that is indicative to the Puerto Barrio region where this play is set.

HERR FAHRENKOPF (Male, 40s-50s, White - German) A tank manufacturer from Frankfurt. Barbaric, threatening, and unruly. Physically large and threatening. Avid supporter of fascism and ignorant of the fact that no one at the resort agrees with him. Believes the chaos, war, and destruction incited by Germany is cause for celebration. Sings Fascistic German Marching song(s) and speaks German.

FRAU FAHRENKOPF (Female, 40s to 50s, German) Of a higher class than her husband. Follower of her husband's radical political beliefs. Speaks the German language fluently. Will be singing German war songs of the period. In the production she will be required to sing Fascistic German Marching song(s) and speak German.

MAXINE (Female, 40s to 60s, Open Ethnicity) OFFER OUT: The proprietor of the hotel. She is a swarthy, affable, and rapaciously lusty woman.

HANK (Male, 40s-50s, Open Ethnicity) CAST He is a tour guide but no better, ethically, or professionally, than any other.

PEDRO (Male, 18 - very early 20’s, Mexican) He is slim and attractive. He is a hardworking employee in the hotel and is also Maxine’s casual lover. Must be able to speak in a Mexican dialect that is indicative to the Puerto Barrio region where this play is set. CAST

JUDITH FELLOWES (Female, 40s to 60s, Open Ethnicity) CAST: A high-maintenance and rule-following American tourist. She is irritable, not concerned with others' perception of her, and fiercely protective as a chaperone of the Baptist Female College travelers like CHARLOTTE GOODALL.

JONATHAN COFFIN (NONNO) (Male, 97, White) CAST: A “very old man” but has a powerful voice for his age. He always seems to be shouting something of importance. Nonno is a poet and a showman. He carries his pride like a banner wherever he goes.

HANNAH JELKES (Female, 40s to 60s, White) CAST: Remarkable looking - ethereal, almost ghostly. She is described as “... a Gothic cathedral image of a medieval saint, but animated”. She is totally feminine and yet androgynous looking - almost timeless. She is an artist who paints portraits of people in the places that she travels to around the world; however, she also takes care of her ninety-seven- year-old grandfather, NONNO.

JAKE LATTA (Male, 40s-50s, Open Ethnicity) CAST: He is a polite and authoritative travel representative. He takes over an irresponsible tour guide’s trip/group.

CHARLOTTE GOODALL (Female, 18+ to play 17, Any Ethnicity) CAST: She is described as a “Teen-age Medea”. She’s an impulsive and love-sick tourist, who is obsessed with SHANNON.

SHANNON (Male, 40s to 60s, White) OFFER OUT: In the script he is described as “Black Irish” As a Reverend and tour guide, his addictions to women, smoking, drinking and law-breaking do not dissuade him from believing in his ability to carry on without consequences.
