In a classroom in a small, Eastern Cape Karoo town in South Africa in 1984, Mr. M, an idealistic teacher, seeks to provide a future for his gifted student Thami by forming a debate team with Isabel, a spirited student from the local white school. But outside the classroom, Mr. M’s hopes for Thami are challenged by their generational divide and increasing political unrest.
Seeking (all roles are available):
Note: All actors must have facility with a South African accent.
Mr. M:
Black South African, 50s-70s. Teacher and debate team coach at an impoverished, all-black boys’ school. Joyful, energetic, deeply hopeful, and in love with words. Relishes his job and his students, and the possibility of effecting change in them.
Isabel:
White South African female, age 17 (age-appropriate actors and actors 18+ will be considered). Top student and debater from a nearby, privileged, all-white girls’ school. Intelligent, impassioned, and in love with language. Stubborn, idealistic and opinionated. A fighter.
Thami:
Black South African male, age 17 (age-appropriate actors and actors 18+ will be considered). Mr. M’s most prized pupil. Brilliant, playful, charismatic and self-assured. A natural leader. Highly impatient, and resentful of authority and “old-fashioned” ways of thinking.
