Mother Hicks, an American Alliance of Theatre and Education Distinguished Play Award Winner, is an evocative story of three outsiders that is richly realized through all of the resources of theatre including poetry, character, and story. Set in southern Illinois, during the great Depression, this play is about three outsiders - - a foundling girl known only as Girl; a deaf young man named Tuc, eloquent in the language of his silence; and an eccentric recluse, Mother Hicks, who is suspected of being a witch. The tale, told with poetry and sign language, chronicles the journeys of these three to find themselves, and each other, in a troubled time.

There will be four roles available for AEA artists, a one AEA/ASM while other roles will be filled by community artists, making a cast of approximately twelve. A chorus of two women and three men speak the words of Tuc’s sign language. The cast breakdown calls for six adult men, four adult women, one young female and young male performer between the ages of ten and fourteen. The role of Mother Hicks has been cast.

The Growing Stage is looking for an actor who is deaf or hearing impaired and is fluent in sign language for the role of Tuc.

Seeking:

Clovis P. Eudy:

Male - 20ish-30ish - Clovis is the owner of Clovis P. Eudy's General Mercantile and is Tuc's employer. Clovis is a serious businessman and has no time for idle chitchat.

Girl:

A foundling, 10-14 years old.

Jake Hammon:

Male - Mid 30s - Jake is a farmer and somewhat of a drifter who befriends Girl but tries to get out of town in search of a better life.

Izzy Sue Ricks:

Female - Mid 30s - Izzy is superstitious, as are most people in town, and is a bit of a gossip and a busybody, but she means well.

Ricky Ricks:

Male – A young boy – 10-14 years old.

Tuc:

Male - 15-25. Tuc is sensitive, eloquent and, because of his hearing loss, frequently misunderstood by residents of the town. Wolf PAC is looking for an actor who is deaf/hearing impaired and is fluent in sign language.

Alma Ward:

Female, late 30s - early 50s - Alma is Hosiah's wife and is a kind, tender soul who wants only the best for Girl. Her sympathy for Girl's plight is genuine and strong.

Hosiah Ward:

Male, late 30s - early 50s - Hosiah is stern, no- nonsense and frequently at odds with his wife on the subject of Girl. The Wards are the family currently responsible for taking care of Girl.

Due to the theatre’s location and lack of mass transportation, actors are encouraged to have their own transportation. For additional information please call (973) 347-4946 or e-mail
