Seeking:

Julie:

Character is a woman, 21-40, any ethnicity. Seeking an actor of formidable power and versatility, with the ability to interpret dense language and give a memorably honest performance as the tomboy daughter of the Count of the manor. Julie was raised by her mother to despise men, but is drawn sexually to Jean. Her journey in the single night's span of the play is a vast one: from powerful assertiveness to meek submission and destruction. She is full of contradictions. She is beautiful, but doesn't keep herself washed or her hair brushed. Actor should be comfortable with very open and trusting physical work with the actor who plays Jean.

Jean:

Character is a man, 25-45, any ethnicity. Seeking an actor of focused intensity to honestly and vibrantly play this servant of the Count. Jean has his sights set far above his station, and lives in a desperate state of frustration that he can't reach the first branch of his climb. Like Julie, he is made of contradictions. He is a connoisseur of fine wines whose job is polishing the Count's boots. His childhood crush on Julie has become grotesque over the years, and now has shades of hatred as it relates to their separation by class. The actor should be able to compassionately and generously engage in physical work with the actor who plays Julie.

Christine:

Character is a woman, 21-40, any ethnicity. Seeking an actor of great compassion and physical nuance to play Jean’s fiancée. Christine is a pragmatist who has accepted her station in life, and has chosen Jean as her mate not for romantic reasons, but for her future security. She has completely subscribed to the religious and classist views of the society in which she lives, and cannot understand Jean's discontentment with the status quo.
