Seeking:
Anna:
Widow of Uncle Dmitri, a Russian ganglord, 30 – 40 years old. Beautiful, capable, vital, tough, she has deep, strong emotions and a frustrated sexual appetite. She was married by arrangement to Dmitri at an early age and has run his gang with an iron hand since his death. Yearns for a freer life with a man of her choice, unconnected with a life of crime. Speaks with a light Russian accent that gets thicker as she drinks.
Nick:
Uncle Dmitri’s doctor, 30 – 40 years old. Intelligent, cynical, alcoholic, yet helplessly and dangerously in love with Uncle Porfiry’s daughter, Mary. Tends to be careless of his appearance and is not confident of his abilities as a physician.
(Uncle) Porfiry:
A Russian ganglord, 50s, and rival of Uncle Dmitri. Earthy, cunning, with a violent temperament that he can suppress or give vent to for “business purposes.” Very Russian and a mean drunk. Served in the Soviet Army with Dmitri in the old days and lusts after Anna now that his rival is out of the picture. He is dangerous. Speaks with a fairly thick Russian accent.
Sergey:
Uncle Dmitri’s son, 30 – 40 years old. The heir apparent to Dmitri’s gang, but much more interested in fashion, especially traditional English tailoring. An ineffective gangleader, he is an Anglophile and romantic, in love with his own speeches. Considers himself uniquely talented in the art of loving a woman, his young wife Sonya.
Michael:
Formerly a brilliant university academic, now a high-school teacher in the reserve National Guard, 30 – 40 years old. Handsome, intensely idealistic, sexually potent, and immensely attractive to women. He has the charm of the self-destructive and the courage of the self-righteous, combined with a deep sensual instinct.
Sasha:
Michael’s wife, Profiry’s cousin and accountant, early 30s. Practical, down-to-earth, a faithful and good wife, but not blind to his attractiveness to other women. Always makes sensible choices even though she knows they never work. The wear of living with Michael, whom she loves passionately, is making her neurotic. Speaks with a light Russian accent that gets thicker as she drinks or gets emotional.
Sonya:
Sergey’s wife, late 20s. Breathtakingly beautiful, of mysterious origins, and probably a secret agent of somebody or another. Employs a heavy Russian accent although she can speak American English perfectly. Former student of Michael with whom she had an affair, and still in love with him, although she is prepared to kill him if necessary.
Mary:
Uncle Porfiry’s Daughter, a mycologist, early 20s. An expert in mushrooms and other flora and fauna, she has a relentlessly scientific mind and an unsettling honesty about the mammalian functions of sex. She is also a Daddy’s girl, who has quietly inherited his ruthlessness.
Osip:
Uncle Porfiry’s body-guard and hit-man, 30s-40s. Soft-spoken, loyal, polite, psychopathic, with a mystical streak. He is a Russian killing machine, gifted in every form of torture. He protects Mary like a perfectly trained and lethal guard-dog. Unknown to his chieftain Porfiry, he adores Anna as a goddess. He is dangerous. Speaks with a fairly thick Russian accent.
