CROWNS

A moving and celebratory musical play in which hats become a springboard for an exploration of black history and identity as seen through the eyes of a young black woman who has come down South to stay with her aunt after her brother is killed in Brooklyn. Hats are everywhere, in exquisite variety, and the characters use the hats to tell tales concerning everything from the etiquette of hats to their historical and contemporary social functioning.

Mabel: Ministers wife. Believes in setting an example of dress and behavior for younger girls. Sharp and sassy.

Yolanda: youngest of the group. The outsider. Asserts herself as a rebellious spirit.

Velma: refers to herself as a hat queen. Tough. Becomes a funeral director.

Jeanette: Flirtatious, brassy, fun loving, full of joy. Looks up to Mother Shaw

Wanda: Most ladylike woman of the group. Stories full of propriety and decorum.

It’s Junie B.’s first day of first grade, and a lot of things have changed for her: Junie’s friend, Lucille, doesn’t want to be her best pal anymore. On the bus, Junie B. makes friends with Herb, the new kid at school. Also, Junie has trouble reading the blackboard and her teacher, Mr. Scary, thinks she may need glasses. Throw in a friendly cafeteria lady, a kickball tournament and a “Top-Secret Personal Beeswax Journal,” and first grade has never been more exciting.

*ADULTS TO PLAY ALL ROLES*

Junie B. Jones: A quirky, energetic first grader with comedic flair. Loves adventures and writing in her journal. Gets upset when things don’t go her way. Wildly precocious, yet completely endearing.

Lucille: Junie B.’s former best friend. The ultimate child diva. Rich girl, well-dressed. In Mr. Scary’s class with Junie B. Will also play BOBBI JEAN PIPER: Grace’s new best friend, and JOSE: another first grader in Mr. Scary’s class who speaks both Spanish and English.

Herb: Junie B.’s new best friend. A cute boy, slightly shy. Endearing and charming. Will also play CHENILLE: Lucille’s other new best friend and Camille’s twin sister. Coordinated and cute.

Grace: Junie B.’s other former best friend. She rides the bus with Junie B. and is now best friends with Bobbi Jean Piper. Will also play MAY: another first grader in Mr. Scary’s class with Junie B. Bossy, know-it-all, Junie’s nemesis, as well as MOTHER: Junie B.’s mom. Exasperated, but understanding.

Lennie: Another first grader. Will also play SHELDON: another first grader in Mr. Scary’s class with Junie B. Nerdy, lactose intolerant, and gets a bit of stage fright, excited about music, as well as CAMILLE: Lucille’s new best friend and Chenille’s twin sister. A follower.

Daddy: Junie B.’s dad. Encouraging and knows how to juggle. Will also play MR. SCARY: Junie B.’s first grade teacher, a warm man, despite his name, as well as MRS. GUTZMAN: the favorite lunch lady at Junie B.’s elementary school, also known as “Gladys Gutzman, Queen of Snacks”.

Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood playing at the family’s Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality, and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father’s hidden desires. Fun Home is a refreshingly honest, wholly original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes.

A hysterical, new musical adaptation of the beloved film about a mother and daughter who, through a little mystic mayhem, wake up to the biggest freak-out ever – trapped inside each other’s body! When an overworked mother and her teenage daughter magically swap bodies, they have just one day to put things right again before mom’s big wedding.

PRINCIPALS:
Katherine Blake: Female. Age: 40s. A single mother who runs her own catering business. Overprotective and Type A, she believes she can have it all by doing it all: event planning, designing, and catering her own perfect wedding. Must also portray Ellie in Katherine's body. Strong belter.

Ellie Blake: Female. Age: 15. The hero of the story. A rumpled, disorganized every girl. She is smart, funny, and passionate about her school's underground scavenger hunt, but sees herself as a What’s-her-name, and easily forgotten, unlike her perfect mom. Must also portray Katherine in Ellie's body. Strong belter.

Mike Riley: Male. Age: 40-49. Katherine’s fiancé and a contractor by trade. A warm, reliable, easygoing guy. He adores Katherine and her kids. Bari-tenor.

Torrey: Female. Age: 30s/40s. Katherine’s high-strung assistant. A nervous nelly perfectionist with a low tolerance for chaos. Eager to please, Torrey tries to remain optimistic in the face of disaster - but can barely keep it together. Should have a knack for physical comedy and deadpan humor.

Dolly, the famed New York City matchmaker, receives her toughest challenge yet when rich grump Horace seeks a suitable wife. She successfully matches many others in the city, including Horace’s niece and two clerks, but everything seems to go wrong when it comes to matching Horace. Dolly finally realizes that maybe she’d like to marry Horace herself, but only if her late husband will send her a sign - and if Horace himself will have her.

PRINCIPALS:
Mrs. Dolly Gallagher Levi: Female. Age: 35-50. A widow who is an indefatigable, meddling matchmaker of strikingly dramatic appearance. Alto-Soprano.

Horace Vandergelder: Male. Age: 40-60. Well-known half-a-millionaire, widower, owns the Feed Store, set in his ways, authoritative, a client of Mrs. Levi’s. Baritone. Some dance experience preferred.

Cornelius Hackl: Male. Age: 30-35. Head clerk at the Feed Store, energetic, enthusiastic, and adventurous. Baritone. Strong dancer.

Barnaby Tucker: Male. Age: 19-22. Assistant to Cornelius at the Feed Store, naïve, energized, follower. Baritone. Strong dancer.

Minnie Fay: Age: 17-20. A young girl who works in Irene’s shop., straight-laced, fresh, follower. Mezzo-soprano. Strong dancer.

Irene Molloy: Female. Age: 30-25. Owns the Hat Shop, widow, beautiful, smart, fun-loving. Mrs. Levi has introduced her to Mr. Vandergelder. Soprano. Strong dancer.

On a small Greek island, Sophie dreams of a perfect wedding — one which includes her father giving her away. The problem? Sophie doesn’t know who he is! Her mother Donna, the former lead singer of the 1970s pop group Donna and the Dynamos, refuses to talk about the past, so Sophie decides to take matters into her own hands. Sneaking a peek in her mother’s old diaries, she discovers three possible fathers: Sam, Bill, and Harry. She secretly invites all three to the wedding, convinced that she’ll know her father when she sees him. But when all three turn up, it may not be as clear as she thought!

PRINCIPALS:
Donna: (late 30s-early 40s – the mother of a 20 year old girl) Attractive and free-spirited. A former lead singer in a group called “Donna and the Dynamos” who now owns and runs a hotel/casino on a Greek island. A strong feminist who also has a zany and vulnerable side.

Sophie: (18-25) A very special young woman who is determined to find the romance and happiness she feels eluded her mother. Has a wild, zany spirit even though she pursues a conventional marriage. Pop soprano.

Tanya: (late 30s-early 40s) A former singer in the “Dynamos”. Rich, sophisticated, acerbic, funny, and witty.

Rosie: (late 30s-early 40s) Also a former singer in the “Dynamos” who now writes for and runs a feminist press. She’s confident, strong, and funny on the outside but shy underneath. Kooky and fun, good comic actress, bit of a clown. Actress who sings.

Sam: (35-45) May be Sophie’s father. Left Donna 20 years ago because he was engaged to another woman. Charming, successful architect. Actor who sings. Baritone.

Harry: (35-45) May be Sophie’s father. British financier, wealthy, buttoned-up, and conservative but trying to reconnect with his freer, youthful self. Must do a very convincing English accent. Also an actor who sings. Baritenor.

Bill: (35-45) May be Sophie’s father. A travel writer with no possessions or strings. Good-natured, always ready for adventure. Funny, preferably a big or imposing man.

Todd wants to be a rock star, but he's living in London in 1349 and the plague keeps getting in his way. With ultimatums from loved ones getting him down and the ghost of his former bandmate pressuring him to make a choice, Todd will have to figure out how to survive the pervasive specter of the Black Death and reconcile his drive to make art with the needs of those suffering around him. Half rock show and half medieval morality play, this new musical follows a young man's struggle to do the right thing, both for himself and his community.

ALL ROLES:
Seeking 6 adult singers (5 male, 1 female) aged 19-30 with rock voices of all ethnicities. Guitar experience is preferred.
