KIND OF BLUE
SYNOPSIS
Ozzie Jones's KIND OF BLUE is a narrative poem and play from his jazz-inspired series, The Real Book, which translates the soul of Miles Davis's legendary 1959 album into a theatrical experience. Rather than a traditional biography, the piece personifies the music itself; the interactions between a Man and a Woman mirror the melodic dialogue between Davis's trumpet and John Coltrane's saxophone. Kind of Blue is the story of a relationship. From first sight meeting, falling in love, to becoming lovers, to betrayal and separation, to reconnection and forgiveness, to marriage and growing old, to watching life's sunset together. Romance that does NOT end in tragedy. Staged and produced at Philadelphia's Freedom Theater and dramaturg developed at the African Continuum Theater at Arena Stage in Washington DC, Kind of Blue was celebrated for its ability to swing with the same improvisational depth and atmospheric mood as the original recording. And for its investigation of a romantic love story without cliché or cynicism. Kind of Blue is a play for lovers.
