Maks is a Polish immigrant who has recently arrived in America. He comes from nothing but is determined to become something. A factory worker in New Jersey, he plays the harmonica and sings the blues, dreaming of becoming a blues musician in Chicago. Despite the height and heat of young love, questions about their future begin to surface.

IRONBOUND

Director’s Statement: The world of Ironbound is a world of constant less. Less safety. Less softness. Less margin for error. Less room for growth. More grip. More demand. More push. It is a world built on counting—numbers, math, keeping track, keeping score—because survival requires constant vigilance. Nothing is wasted. There is no such thing as “extra.” This play is an exercise in endurance. It is not linear, because survival is not linear. It asks: What lengths will you go to for the one thing you have that no one can take from you? My Polish blood and New Jersey roots shape my desire to honor the beauty of struggle that lives inside this play. Darja’s rigid hope, her unexpected humor, and her sharp negotiations fuel a journey worth placing onstage. And it is my own rigid hope that a life—through grit, wit, will, and Bruce Springsteen’s Secret Garden—can be carved into something that feels, however briefly, settled, meaningful, and held.

Producers’ Statement: Loveborg Productions was born from a shared artistic and personal partnership between Emmy-winning producer Marisa Van Den Borre and award-winning actor Chad Coe (Monster, Abbott Elementary, Matlock). Drawn to storytelling rooted in rich, complex characters, Ironbound represents theater at its most human. As actors, we were eager to savor Martyna Majok’s language and create space to fully inhabit her words on stage. As a married couple, this project also marks a return to our theater roots, where we first met performing together in Resolving Hedda. We are beyond excited to return to our roots and create something truly special.
