NOTE: This play deals with some adult themes; orgasms will be simulated onstage (though in a clinical, not sexual, situation). Actors submitted should be comfortable with a fair amount of sexuality and some nudity (specified in role descriptions).

Seeking:

Dr. Givings:

Caucasian male, 40s. Clinical, questioning, intelligent, and innovative, he is a true Man of Science. Despite great intellectual faculties, he cannot understand how to emotionally connect with his wife, and can seem cold, although he has a good heart. Full nudity required.

Catherine Givings:

Caucasian female, mid 20s. Young, open, naïve - chafes against the boredom and propriety of Victorian life and frustrated by her husband’s refusal to tell her what happens beyond his office door. A very young mother who cannot breastfeed her child, she aches to connect physically with someone. She is looking for the full expression of a life, emotionally and physically. Partial nudity. Will need to simulate orgasms onstage.

Mr. Daldry:

Caucasian male, 40s. A successful businessman with a young wife, a bit coarse and thick; he cannot understand his wife’s needs or her physical rejection of him.

Elizabeth:

African American female, 30s. The Givings’ wet nurse. A mother of two who recently lost her third child to cholera. Earthy, open, maternal and nurturing, she struggles to maintain a safe distance from the Givings and their baby. Should be attractive, naturally sexual and have all the warmth and vulnerability of a nursing mother.
