PREPARATION

Total audition time not to exceed five minutes. Please bring a stapled headshot and resume.

Please prepare either two contrasting monologues from any play or two sides from any play listed below. When reaching out for an appointment, please indicate the show and character for which you would like to read and we will send you the appropriate sides. A reader will be provided.

JANINE— Female, white, early 60’s
Janine is a well-traveled college professor at “an elite and storied research university in the Northeast.” She is a historian and teaches a specialized class on historical revolutions. She is proud of her ambition and high status as a woman working in a predominately male institution. She analyzes situations from every angle before reaching a conclusion, often playing devil’s advocate. She regularly goes the extra mile for her students. Tenured.

ZOE— Female, black, 19
Zoe is a sophomore at the university. Also ambitious, and also staggeringly intelligent, Zoe has a complex relationship with the university - loving academic work but feeling marginalized by the curriculum and the teachers - including Janine's whitewashed view of American history. A member of the Cross Cultural Alliance and a protest organizer, Zoe is feeling an increasing need to speak up about her frustrations. She isn't sure how much faith she has in the institution or the older generation, and this can make her willing to alienate people in order to stand up for what she sees as the truth.

SEEKING THE FOLLOWING:

SHERLOCK HOLMES – Male, 50’s - 60’s
Famed literary character, detective Sherlock Holmes. Later on in his career, arrogant and egotistical. Polite, sociable and purposefully condescending at times. He is not easily shaken and because of this he can be knowingly quite cruel to those around him.

DOCTOR WATSON – Male, 50’s - 60’s
Assistant to Sherlock Holmes. He takes great care to be considerate when Holmes is choosing to ignore the distress going on around him. After decades of working for Holmes he is starting to get worn down by constantly playing sidekick. Before his time working for Holmes, Watson was a well-respected doctor with a love of literature and an enviable intellect

MRS. HUDSON –Female, 50’s - 60’s
The housekeeper who takes care of 221B Baker Street. She is loyal to Holmes and Watson and thinks the world of them. Strong maternal instincts and is prone to emotional outbursts.

LIZA/DAMION MORIARTY/ BERTHA WALMSLEY – Female, mid 20’s
Bertha Walmsley is a poor actress who is out of work. She is sick with tuberculosis and is set to die within the month. Watson provides her with a lump sum of money to “play a practical joke” on Holmes that involves her pretending to be Liza Moriarty, daughter of Holmes’ arch nemesis. She is seductive and charming, both as Bertha and Liza. In a final twist, Bertha appears as Damion Moriarty (Liza’s brother) to aid Holmes in a test of Watson’s allegiance. As Damion she is embittered and vengeful.

INSPECTOR LESTRADE – Male, 50’s - 60’s
The local inspector who works for Scotland Yard and is a well-intentioned buffoon. He is incredibly loyal and protective of Holmes and Watson.

All parts must be vocally musically proficient.

YOUNG EMILE – Male, black, late 20’s-early 30’s
Portrays famed boxer Emile Griffith from his youth into his late 20’s. He exudes hope and charisma, full of talent and potential. Willing to risk everything he has to make his mother happy. Initially he is content with other creative pursuits, but relents when his mother and new manager, Howie, convince him to become a boxer. He is from St. Thomas and speaks with a British-Caribbean dialect.

EMILE GRIFFITH
This role is cast.

HOWIE– Male, white, late 40’s
Emile’s manager. Believes in Emile to a fault and lives vicariously through him. Pushes Emile hard, specifically trying to get him to tap into his “killer instinct”.

BENNY/BENNY JR. - Male, black, mid 20’s
BENNY- Famed boxer Benny Peret. A boxer who wanted to be a butcher. Is energized by the theatrics involved in boxing. He taunts Emile before a match using gay slurs. During the match he collapses and is rushed to the hospital, dying 10 days later.
BENNY JR.- Benny’s son who has grown up and created his own life separate of Emile. He is hesitant but ultimately forgiving and compassionate.

MANUEL/ SINGER 1– Male, latino, 40’s
BENNY’s manager. Guilt ridden after he allows Benny to fight in the match that ultimately kills him.

LUIS– Male, latino, mid-30’s but able to play a range of ages.
Emile’s early love interest and eventual partner. Lives with Emile. Dedicated, caring and patient. From the Bronx.

EMELDA– Female, black, late 50’s
Emile’s mother. Desperate for a better life with her eyes constantly on the horizon, even if that means neglecting the present. Has 7 children and left them all with family members so she could work in America.

SADIE/SINGER 3- Female, black, mid-20’s
From St. Thomas. Falls in love with Emile after he dazzles her at a party. They have an unhappy and cold marriage.

LUCIA/SINGER 4- Female, black, mid-20’s
Benny’s wife. Settled down with Benny quickly and centered her life around him, familiar with EMILE from the neighborhood. She doesn’t like to watch her husband box.

ENSEMBLE/SINGER 2- Male, black, mid-20’s
Must be vocally musically proficient.

JULIET – Female, 20’s. Daughter of Capulet and Lady Capulet. Set to marry Paris.

BENVOLIO – Male, 20’s. Montague’s nephew. He is a genuine confidant to Romeo.

TYBALT – Male, 20’s. A cousin of Juliet’s. Fiercely loyal to the Capulet family.

CAPULET – Male, 40’s. The patriarch of the Capulet family.

LADY CAPULET – Female, 40’s. The matriarch of the Capulet family.

MONTAGUE – Male, 40’s. Patriarch of the Montague family.

PRINCE ESCALUS – Male, late 20’s. The prince of Verona. Kinsman of Mercutio and Paris. Wants to maintain public peace.

PARIS – Male, 20’s. A friend of Prince Escalus and the chosen suiter of Juliet.

THE NURSE – Female, 40-50’s. Juliet’s nurse, the woman who has cared for her and acts as a maternal figure.

MERCUTIO – Male, 20’s. Kinsman to the Prince and to Romeo. Filled with wit and exuberance.

FRIAR LAWRENCE – Male, 50’s. Friends to both Romeo and Juliet, marries both of them in secret.

The remaining parts will be divided amongst additional ensemble roles.

Please note all roles must be musically trained or musically proficient. Upon audition please share any ability with instruments.

LEMML – Male, early 40’s
The stage manager of Sholem Ashe’s God of Vengeance. He a working class man full of heart and dedication. He loves God of Vengeance and does everything he can to support the artistic integrity of the play and the troupe. He is a quiet leader who works through multiple language barriers.

The following six (6) tracks play multiple parts; actors in a Polish theatre troupe, characters in God of Vengeance by Sholem Asch, and those within the community. Each track is identified by type:

THE FEMALE INGÉNUE (ACTOR 1) – Female, late 20’s
The ingénue. Plays the untrained actress trying her best and often failing. Nervous. This track additionally plays the strong willed young women. Passionate and vivacious.

THE MALE INGÉNUE (ACTOR 2) – Male, late 30’s
Plays the young Sholem Asch and young actors of the troupe. Plays characters trying to make change in an era of censorship. Motivated and moralistic.

THE FEMALE MIDDLE (ACTOR 3) – Female, mid 30’s
Plays the driven actress trying her best against all odds, often succeeding through hard work. Seasoned and tough. In God of Vengeance she plays the older prostitute who falls in love with the daughter of the brothel owner.

THE MALE MIDDLE (ACTOR 4) – Male, mid-late 50’s
Plays the professional and business minded men. Often plays characters who are defending culture, Jewish or otherwise. Traditionally minded. Upper class.

THE FEMALE ELDER (ACTOR 5) – Female, 40’s-50’s
Plays the older actresses and characters. Full of wit and has a bite. She keeps everyone in line with heart. She plays the devout Jewish mother in God of Vengeance.

THE MALE ELDER (ACTOR 6) – Male, early 60’s
Plays the older, mischievous, charismatic men with gravitas who are aiding the production of God of Vengeance. He plays the older heartbroken Sholem Asch who feels betrayed by his community, both within the theatre and within the world.

SEEKING THE FOLLOWING:

Please note all roles must be musically proficient: percussion and vocals.

YERMA – Female, 25-40
A vivacious and headstrong woman. She is married to Juan and desperately wants a child. The more obsolete the potential of a child is, the more manic passionate about wanting one Yerma becomes. As she begins to be consumed by the emptiness of her life she is confronted by the women around her as they provide alternate options to having a child herself. She loves her husband deeply but her obsession becomes all consuming.

JUAN – Male, 25-40
Yerma’s husband. He is a hardworking, honest man. Dry, traditional and practical. He struggles to understand Yerma’s desperation. Through his eyes he provides everything for her and yet is still not enough. The more rash Yerma becomes, the more he withdraws and resents that he is unable to make her happy.

VICTOR – Male 25-40
A childhood friend of both Yerma and Juan’s. He is charming and passionate. He sees things the same way as Yerma, filtering through the heart not the head. Everyone loves him as he is open, generous and intuitive.

The following characters double as an ensemble of women from the town:

MARTA – Female, late teens – early 20’s
A friend of Yerma’s who is pressured to have a child. Loves being in the middle of the action, a kind of exuberant party-girl, who though she resents the traditional culture she is living in manages to do so without bitterness. Flippant and opinionated. Her mother is Dolores.

VERONICA – Female, 25-35
A young woman who is friends with Yerma. A new mother, she has a brilliant mind and aspirations to build a life beyond the town, but stayed and is doing her best. She is frazzled and accidentally thoughtless with her children.

MARIA – Female, 25-35
Yerma’s best friend. Through the play we watch her be absorbed by her family life to the expense of her other interests, as well as see her frustration and pain as Yerma loses herself more and more in her own need for a child. Maria is effortlessly fertile, and though she loves her children has none of Yerma’s illusions about motherhood. Religious, patient, open and cheerful, in the end Yerma does wear her down, but Maria stays as positive as she can for as long as she can.

DOLORES – Female, 50-65
Marta’s mother. The wise woman of the village - the midwife, the “witch”, the “Curandera.” She is the place where women come to as a last resort and her laying on of hands and use of herbs and spells probably help more than the town can acknowledge. She is balanced, been through enough to know it all. And knows everyone’s history.

INCARNACIÓN – Female, 60-75
An older woman from a nearby village. Smart ass, know it all, seen it all. No sentimental bones in her body: she loves men, loves sex, loves her many children and appreciates life. A realist.
