HELL'S KITCHEN

SYNOPSIS: In the mid 90’s, in an apartment high above the energy and grit of Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood, 17-year-old Ali squints toward the horizon until she can just see the Hudson River. Despite the warnings of her protective mother, the symphony of the street calls to her — promising freedom, excitement, and the possibility of love. Finding herself. When a wise piano teacher helps her find her voice, Ali learns she can make the city her own.

THE FOLLOWING ROLES ARE CAST:

JESSICA: THIS ROLE IS CAST. Character is a BIPOC woman, 18+ to play late teens/early 20s. A STRONG singer/dancer who is comfortable with R&B/pop/jazz vocals and harmonizing.

TINY: THIS ROLE IS CAST. Character is a Black woman, 18+ to play late teens/early 20s. A STRONG singer/dancer who is comfortable with rap/spoken word, R&B/pop/jazz vocals and harmonizing.

RIQ/UNDERSTUDY KNUCK: THIS ROLE IS CAST. Character is a Black man in his 20s. Tenor. An extremely strong soul/R&B singer who is skilled in and comfortable with improv and ad lib. Think the vocal harmonies of 1980’s groups like Boyz II Men, Jodeci, New Edition etc. Experience with drumming and/or percussion is a big plus (please note on submission).

Q: THIS ROLE IS CAST. Character is a BIPOC man in his 20s. Baritone. A STRONG singer/mover who is comfortable with R&B/pop/jazz vocals. Experience with drumming and/or percussion is a big plus (please note on submission).

CRYSTAL/UNDERSTUDY MISS LIZA JANE: THIS ROLE IS CAST. Character is a Black woman in her 40s. An exceptionally strong, powerfully-voiced singer who is comfortable with R&B/pop/jazz vocals and harmonizing.

MILLIE/UNDERSTUDY JERSEY: THIS ROLE IS CAST. Character is a Hispanic woman in her 40s. An extraordinary & powerfully-voiced singer with a brassy sound and lots of vocal flexibility. Possesses a strong, HIGH belt and ability to mix. Comfortable with improvisation, R&B/pop/jazz vocals, and harmonies. Because of the improvisational nature of the music, there is no limit on high belt range.

RAY/UNDERSTUDY DAVIS: THIS ROLE IS CAST. Character is a Black man in his late 30s-early 40s. Tenor. An exceptional singer who is comfortable with R&B/pop/jazz vocals.

OFFSTAGE SWING - U/S ALI/JESSICA/TINY: THIS ROLE IS CAST. Character is a young Black woman. 18+ to play 17. LEAD role. An extraordinary singer who is comfortable with R&B/pop/jazz vocals as well as rap/spoken word.

OFFSTAGE SWING - U/S DAVIS/RAY: THIS ROLE IS CAST. Character is a Black man in his 40s. An exceptional singer who is comfortable with R&B/pop/jazz vocals who can hold down harmonies.

OFFSTAGE SWING: U/S MILLIE/CRYSTAL: THIS ROLE IS CAST. Character is a Black woman in her late 40s. An exceptionally strong, powerfully-voiced singer who is comfortable with R&B/pop/jazz vocals and harmonizing.

OFFSTAGE SWING: U/S DANCE ENSEMBLE RIQ/Q/RAY): THIS ROLE IS CAST. Characters are young Black men. Tenor. A strong soul/R&B singer. Will provide offstage coverage for DANCE ENSEMBLE as well as the roles of RIQ, Q & RAY.

OFFSTAGE SWING - JESSICA/TINY/DANCE ENSEMBLE: THIS ROLE IS CAST. Characters are young Black women. 18+ to play 17. LEAD role. A strong singer with a high belt who is comfortable with R&B/pop/jazz vocals as well as rap/spoken word. Will provide offstage coverage for DANCE ENSEMBLE as well as the roles of JESSICA & TINY.
