Seeking:

Hector Hushabye:

40-50. Fit, masculine and handsome. Women fall for him frequently. Restless energy, looking for something, somewhere to channel his physical/creative/intellectual energies. Intelligent, high verbal Shavian leading man. An actor who would be cast Elyot in Private Lives. A background in Classical theatre, experience in other Shaw plays, ability to handle Shaw’s language well would be appropriate. British dialect

Ellie Dunn:

Young 2’s. attractive, intelligent, high-verbal Shavian ingénue. Daughter of liberal, idealistic father. During the play she is disabused of some naïve and romantic notions she has about life (and men) and becomes more clear-sighted, practical and assertive. Great role for a classically trained young actress. Requires emotional availability, and ability to handle Shaw’s language with wit and intelligence. Previous experience with Shaw plays is a plus. British dialect.

Hesione Hushabye:

40-50. Attractive Shavian leading lady. The men in the play see her as a ‘Siren’. She is a bohemian from the era of the Bloombury Group (Virginia Woolf, Vanessa Bell, etc) with the ‘advanced’ social, political and cultural views of that period. She is intelligent, high-verbal, perceptive regarding others, gracious, warm and playful. Full of energy and passions that could be put to more productive uses if the opportunities existed—instead she involves herself with love-life of people like Ellie, using her charms and with to seduce and persuade others to do as she pleases. An actress with experience with Classical roles, and ability to handle Shaw’s language well, would be appropriate. Anyone who would be cast as Amanda in Private Lives would have the qualities that would be right for this role. British dialect.

Billy Dunn:

60s character man. He was the bosun of Captain Shotover’s ship long ago. Has probably held a variety of jobs since, some of them likely of a shady nature. He is a survivor, and he is smart—he has devised an elaborate ‘burglary’ con that manages to get him money for well-off people by playing on their desire for discretion. Any actor who has played or would be cast as Dolittle in Pygmalion would be good casting for this. Though the character is lower class, and may have the accent to go with it, he is typical of Shaw’s ruffians in that he is intelligent, high-verbal, quick-witted, likeable and persuasive. Actor will also understudy CAPTAIN SHOTOVER.
