No roles will be understudied.
BASILIUS (35-50 TENOR) – any ethnicity; King of Arcadia. A sexy, good ol' boy. A hothead, but not a despot. Blindly thinks Arcadia is doing great under his masculine rule, which will be sorely tested during the course of the show.
GYNECIA (35-45 ALTO) - any ethnicity; Queen of Arcadia. Sexy, wise, beautiful. Like any longstanding spouse, knows how to get her way with her husband when push comes to shove.
PAMELA (20’S MEZZO-SOPRANO) - any ethnicity; the favored, beautiful older princess; willful, self-dramatizing, obsessed with appearances; a good egg underneath it all; a fierce belter.
PHILOCLEA (20’S SOPRANO) - any ethnicity; the younger, plainer princess; strong-willed but loyal to family; Shy and a good girl, she yearns to follow her heart rather than obey her father's orders.
DAMETAS (40-50 BARITONE) - any ethnicity; Prime Minister of Arcadia; wise and patient; father to Mopsa; a widower who still harbors sorrow.
MOPSA (20’S MEZZO-SOPRANO) - any ethnicity; Handmaiden to Pamela. Warm, skeptical. Growing up without a mother has made her wise beyond her years about everyone and everything.
MUSIDORUS (20’S TENOR) - any ethnicity; guileless and fearless shepherd who loves Philoclea; discovers another side to himself when forced to cross-gender; proficient in physical comedy and classical text.
PYTHIO (25+ ALTO/BARITONE) - any ethnicity, transgender or nonbinary; The Oracle; powerful, mysterious. Demanding. Great sense of humor--can see through everyone--they are the Oracle of Delphi, after all.
