Alan Raleigh:
A driven, high-achieving lawyer for big pharma. A tough-minded businessman, not afraid to speak his mind. Can come off as ruthless, chilly, not invested in conciliation, feelings, or anything touchyfeely.
Underneath his cool he sees himself as a kind of old-fashioned warrior, and it pains him that his most
brutal weapons are limited to a cell phone and a laptop.
Annette Raleigh:
Probably a petite woman, pretty, accustomed to using her femininity as a social tool-- i.e., she sometimes talks in a 'little girl' voice, she has a nervous stomach, is shy to throw her opinion into a conversation, and when she does the opinion is likely to be mild and conciliatory. Once a certain threshold has been crossed and her"mother lioness" is aroused, she can be hilariously vulgar, aggressive, and protective.
Michael Novak:
The son of a working-class family. Through smarts and determination rose to a level of fairly impressive wealth and scored a high-achieving wife from a family of intellectuals. He is very well spoken and has educated himself to a fault, but in this neighborhood he will always seem a bit rough around the edges. To this day he is more comfortable having a beer with his working-class laborer employees than he is in his own (adopted) social milieu of artists, businesspeople and organic-market lefties.
Veronica Novak:
An ambitious, intellectual writer of books on African art and politics. Extremely invested in being knowledgeable about the finer things: cuisine, decor, you name it, Veronica is an expert. She has read enough feminist theory to know the double standard that a woman who is not afraid to speak her mind will be called 'pushy', and she has decided to speak her mind whenever she feels like it. She is not
afraid to take control of a conversation. At the same time she is only human, all of this effort is exhausting, and her feelings can be hurt to the point of tears when she is belittled or insulted.
