Breakdown

ELYSIAN FIELDS... A NEW MUSICAL (FORMERLY ABE AND JOSH ... A NEW MUSICAL)

SYNOPSIS

Abe and Josh are ready to tie the knot on the dance floor of the Blue Moon of Kentucky Club during its annual President's Day P.I.L.F Party. That is until Abe gets cold feet. Throughout the night we travel back in time and follow the ill-fated love affair between Abraham Lincoln and Joshua Speed.

SEEKING:

BLACK-EYED SUZIE: Tenor. A black, veteran drag queen. Our emcee for the evening, our cosmic tour guide between two time periods: Lincoln's 19th Century and 2016 soon after the Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage. Some might say she's past her prime, but she's not having it. Not in the house that she built as longtime DJ and hostess at Lexington's Blue Moon of Kentucky Club. Came of age at the tail end of the AIDS epidemic, to which she lost the love of her life. Has known plenty of heartache.

JOSH REDDY: Tenor. Early 20's to early 50's. Owns a hardware store in Lexington, Kentucky, where he and his fiancé Abe Manowitz reside. Doubles as 19th-century JOSHUA SPEED, who owns a General Store in Springfield, Illinois. He and his best friend and roommate Abraham Lincoln share a bed above the store. His family owns a large Kentucky plantation. Plays the ukulele and writes poetry. Sensitive type.

ABE KAPLAN: Tenor. Tall and thin, plays late 20's to mid 50's. Raised in NYC, progressive civil rights attorney in Lexington, Kentucky where he resides with his fiancé Josh Reddy. Doubles as 19th-century ABRAHAM LINCOLN, best friend and roommate of Joshua Speed and future 16th president of the United States. Not nearly as sensitive as, and much more ambitious than history portrays him. Charming but calculated.

JUDY KAPLAN: Mezzo Soprano, 60's. Mother of Abe. Life-long New Yorker, veteran Broadway performer. Good old-fashioned progressive, except when it comes to her son's orientation.

BRENDA REDDY: Alto, 60's, single mother of Josh. Successful solo country artist who often appears at the Grand Ole Opry. Big mouth, bigger hair, biggest heart. Has a past with Del.

MARY TODD LINCOLN: Alto. Wife of the president. Doubles as ELIZABETH EDWARDS: Soprano. Sister of Mary Todd.

DEL: Bass, mid 50's. Front man of Del and the Blue Ball Boys, house band of Blue Moon of Kentucky Club. Josh's father, but nobody else knows that except Josh's mother Brenda.

COLE: Bass. Josh's Best Friend. Fancies himself a Black Cowboy. Not bright but his heart and body more than make up for it.

ENSEMBLE: Patrons of the Blue Moon of Kentucky Club dressed up for the night as various POTUS and FLOTUS: George and Martha Washington, FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt, JFK and Jackie O, Richard and Pat Nixon, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Barack and Michelle Obama.
