Seeking (all roles are available):
Eddie Birdlace:
21. Good-looking US Marine about to ship off to Vietnam in 1963. From Rochester, NY. Careless. Tough on the outside, but lonely and lost, somewhere between boy and man. Contemporary tenor voice, chest voice to at least an A. Also must be comfortable in mix. Lead.
Rose Fenny:
19. Plain, homely, awkward exterior. Inside, bursting with life, ideas and passion—scared to show it. A dreamer. Works as a waitress in her mother’s diner; has never left home. Strong mix, but comfortable belting as well. Needs to be very comfortable in folk and pop styles. Guitar skills a plus but not required. Lead.
Bernstein:
Jewish man, 20. US Marine leaving for Vietnam. From Cleveland, OH. Inexperienced when it comes to sex and life. Quirky, energetic, genuine. Solid contemporary baritenor, comfortable to F or G. A character voice would work in this role.
Boland:
Man, 20s. US Marine leaving for Vietnam. Southern. Handsome charmer/cad. Doesn’t worry too much about telling the truth, just getting by. Can be overconfident and a bit insensitive, but always in the name of having fun. High, clear tenor.
Marcy:
Late 20s/early 30s. Brash, crass, trashy, no mind-to-mouth filter. Role requires a great sense of over-the-top comic timing. Marcy is not pretty (nearly toothless!), but knows how to do herself up when necessary, and probably makes a decent living as a prostitute. Strong, high belt required. Marcy’s voice is as strong as her personality.
Ruth Two Bears / Others:
Multi-character track (females, late 30s/early 40s) for one performer. Ruth: Native American. Stoic, deadpan. Actress also plays Mama (Rose’s 40ish, overworked single mother) and a prim Librarian. Strong singer.
Fector / Hippie:
Two-character track (males, early 20s) for one performer. Fector: US Marine leaving for Vietnam. Not too bright. One of the guys. Actor also plays a Hippie. High tenor with a Bb. Comfortable singing in tight harmony.
Stevens / Others:
Multi-character track (males, early 20s) for one performer. Stevens: US Marine leaving for Vietnam. Judge of the dogfight. Cocky. Actor also plays a snooty Waiter and a Hippie. Contemporary tenor voice, though could be baritone. Comfortable singing in tight harmony.
Lounge Singer / Others:
Multi-character track (males, 40s/50s) for one performer. Lounge Singer: Smooth crooner at the low-rent Nite Lite. Actor in this track is a utility player who also plays Pete (a former Army man), Sergeant, Big Tony (a tattoo artist) and Phil (proprietor of a small folk-music club). Contemporary tenor voice, but must be comfortable in more pastiche styles as well (early ‘60s music ranging from Engelbert Humperdinck to The Beatles).
Chippy / Others:
Multi-character track (females, 20s) for one performer. Chippy: Feisty young prostitute. Actress also plays Fector’s Party Date and a Hippie. Strong singer.
