BREAKDOWN

Sofia was recently hired as an empathy coach at a debt collection agency—and clearly, she has her work cut out for her. These employees can barely identify what an emotion is, much less practice deep, radical compassion for others. And while they painstakingly stumble towards enlightenment, someone keeps mugging Eva in the kitchen. An outrageous comedy about the absurdity—and the danger—of a world where some people’s feelings matter more than others’.

Seeking:

SOFIA (F):
Mid 20s to early 30s; any ethnicity. Empathy coach who is warm, assertive, and not judgmental. She takes things in stride and really believes empathy is the answer to most problems. She begins the play confident and self-assured but as her approach fails, self-doubt creeps in, causing her to compromise her values to please the group. She represses unresolved anger towards her parents. The “straight man.”

EVA (F):
Early 30s; any ethnicity. Eva is nervous and accommodating, and she has become the master at laughing so as not to cry. A bit frenetic, a bit of a live wire. Constantly agreeing to undercut herself for the good of the group. She can read as fragile, but she has a strong inner core—and we see more and more of it as the play goes on.

JON (M):
Late 40s; any ethnicity. Charming middle management who wears the label of boss with ease. He can get away with saying offensive things because he says them quickly and with a really nice smile. He is good at acting like the nice guy until he isn’t getting what he wants—at that point he transforms into a bully on a dime.

HOWIE (M):
Early 30s; any ethnicity. A ticking time bomb who has gotten very good at appearing unflappable. His anger is always simmering right beneath the surface. Volatile and explosive.

JORDAN (M):
Late 20; any ethnicity. The sensitive artist who is a feminist until a woman rejects him and he lashes out. Presents as confident with a good sense of humor. He bought into the office culture years ago, but he is always faking his conviction just a little.

SOFIA’S MOTHER/JANIE, actor doubles (F):
40s/50s; any ethnicity. Sofia’s Mother is empathetic and grounded. She is in a fragile place but is trying to put on a brave face for her daughter. Nurturing, accommodating, loving. Janie is ghost-like and a little odd. Empathetic, firm, the leader of the women’s bathroom.

OLD MAN (M):
60s+; any ethnicity. In the world of this play, Old Man is 130. His violent tendencies have only been tempered by age. Verbose, insistent, feels comfortable and enjoys holding court, confused at moments, appears with a walker or in a wheelchair due to his absurdly old age.

IMPORTANT NOTE: for ALL characters, we are eager to see performers of diverse backgrounds. We are actively seeking a diverse company: please submit without regard to body structure/type, disability, ethnicity, gender, or race - we hope to make our auditions as accessible and inclusive as possible.
