Breakdown

CYRANO

SEEKING:

UNDERSTUDY 1: Male, Any ethnicity, 30-45 years old – covering the parts of YAN and 2. YAN is incredibly warm and ridiculously handsome – the epitome of conventional masculinity. He’s able to express himself physically but often gets stuck when it comes to words. He is both nemesis and protégé to Cyrano, as he attempts to woo Roxanne. 2 is the voice of tradition and tragedy. Laconic and dry, he’s always on hand with a cutting remark or provocation. He’s a man of convention, hiding his true, and surprising, passion for dance underneath heavy cynicism. Must be a confident mover. A plus if actor has singing abilities.

UNDERSTUDY 2: Female, Any ethnicity, 18-35 years old. Covering the parts of CYRANO, 1 and 3. CYRANO is – or thinks she is – the smartest person in the room. Charismatic, quick-witted, and apparently self-confident, although these qualities mask a deep insecurity bordering on self-loathing that much of her brashness is designed to distract from or compensate for. 1 is Cyrano’s best friend and closest ally – the nearest thing to an equal. She’s warm and grounded; an old soul with timeless energy. 1 is stoic and considered but can pull rank when she needs to. 3 is the voice of the new – they are wide-eyed, naïve and deeply infuriating to a bullish Cyrano. The youngest of the group, they struggle to be heard despite often having the most profound and beautiful things to say. 3 has a big heart, and throughout the course of the play learns how to make their voice heard. Must be comfortable and skilled with language. A plus if actor has singing abilities.
