BREAKDOWN
HESTER FERRIS: An elegant, sophisticated, highly intelligent Washington hostess. She is an integral part of the Georgetown power brokers. She is principled, passionate and dignified. She appears as three ages in the play – early 50s, early 60s and mid 80s.
JEAN SWIFT: HESTER’S sister – a widow. She is shy, far less flamboyant than her sister. But she too understands Washington politics and is equally committed to liberal causes. She appears as three ages in the play – early 50s, early 60s and mid 80s.
CHANDLER HARRIS: HESTER’S lover - a debonair, sophisticated Senator. He is comfortable in the halls of power and confident in his role as a Washington insider. He is married -but is devoted to HESTER, her family and her causes. He plays two ages: mid 50s and mid 60s.
COLIN FERRIS/ ETHAN FERRIS: COLIN: HESTER’S son – a pampered scion of a wealthy Washington family. He is well educated but lacks the burning ambition of his wife. He appears as two ages 27 and 35. - ETHAN: A passionate dedicated school teacher in the Inner City.
ANNA FITZGERALD: COLIN’S wife. A very ambitious, almost ruthless social climber. She is well educated but has an inferiority complex as she grew up in a small town in Minnesota. Her road to power puts her on a collision course with HESTER. She appears as two ages mid20s and mid30s.
GEORGE MALLONEE: A Senator from Kentucky. A smart but reasonable politician (Aged mid 50s)
CAROLYN MALLONEE: GEORGE’S wife – if anything more adept at political brinkmanship than her husband. Elegant, smart and fearless. (Aged mid to late 40s)
DONALD LOGAN: ETHAN’S partner. He is an African-American Graduate student. Intellectually curious and very much in love with ETHAN. (Aged mid 20s)
