BREAKDOWN

BORN FOR THIS is a heart-warming and hilarious journey toward self-discovery. Detroit natives BeBe and CeCe Winans, youngest siblings of the Winans Family gospel dynasty, experience the ultimate in culture shocks when invited to join Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker's Praise the Lord network television show. The teenaged Winans become not only television celebrities, but also part of the Bakker family, integrating TV evangelism in the segregated South. As BeBe and CeCe encounter fame, and forge a friendship with a young Whitney Houston, BeBe must learn to balance his desire for success with his true calling.

SEEKING ENSEMBLE TO COVER THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

BEBE WINANS (Male African-American 20s – 30s) The youngest of seven sons in the renowned Winans family. BeBe is ambitious, naïve, extremely charismatic and an extraordinary talent. Born For This is a coming of age journey in which BeBe learns how to navigate the sacred and the secular through disappointment and humor on the road to stardom. As his star rises, he realizes he must decide if he will lose his faith for fame. Brother of CeCe. AN ENSEMLBE MEMBER TO COVER THIS PART

CECE WINANS (Female African- American 20s – 30s) Like BeBe, CeCe is an extraordinary talent, but unlike BeBe, she is a reluctant star. She would prefer to stay home and raise a family, but she was given the gift of a spectacular voice. She marries young which drives a wedge between her and the family, and the ultimate wedge between her and BeBe. AN ENSEMBLE MEMBER TO COVER THIS PART

ENSEMBLE MAY COVER THE FOLLOWIN ROLES:

CARVIN WINANS (Male, African American, late 20s-early 30s) One of the twins, who are the third and fourth oldest Winans siblings. A great gospel singer, and member of the group ‘The Winans.’ A bit of a copycat to Marvin. Must have range

MARVIN WINANS (Male, African American, late 20s-early 30s) One of the twins, who are the third and fourth oldest Winans siblings. A great gospel singer, and member of ‘The Winans.’ Jealous of Bebe and Cece’s commercial success. Of course he wanted them to succeed, but once they do he surprises himself with how hard it is on him. He becomes an extraordinary minister. Must have range

MICHAEL WINANS (Male, African American, mid-late 20s) The fifth oldest Winans sibling. He also sings in the group ‘The Winans.’ Wonderful gospel voice when he sings. Very quiet off stage – barely ever speaks up unless it’s in song. Must have range

HOWARD (Male, African American, early 30s) A music director who gets Bebe and Cece onto the PTL Club, and watches over them, operating as half manager, half older brother. DOUBLES WITH MICHAEL WINANS

PENNY (Female, While, early 20s) A singer on the PTL Club. A Christian girl from North Carolina. She is kind, and friendly. She stands up against racism. She and Bebe become close friends – perhaps even crushes, and this brings a backlash against her. SOPRANO.

JIMMY RAY (Male, White, mid 20s-mid 40s) A singer of the PTL Club. A Christian man from North Carolina. He is a staunch racist. Though he befriends Bebe, he thinks of him as “one of the good ones.” He is angry that Bebe and Cece become the stars of the PTL Club show. Tenor or Baritone

WHITNEY HOUSTON (Female, African American, early-mid 20s. Must be comparable to Whitney in her younger days) One of the top pop singers of all time. One of the best female voices of the century. She skyrocketed to fame at an early age, and she struggled to handle the consequences of that. She first meets the older Winans, and when she is introduced to Bebe and Cece they become like siblings. She is her true self with them – the girl she is underneath the fame.

POP WINANS (Male, African American, late 40s-early 50s) A fantastic gospel singer, of the classic style. No pop sound to his voice. Loves and worries about his children. Very wise. Celebrates their successes. ROLE CAST

MOM WINANS (Female, African American, 40s) Great singer. Firm but loving mother of the Winans children. ROLE CAST

RONALD WINANS (Male, African American, late 20s-early 30s) The second oldest Winans brother, and the oldest in the gospel group ‘The Winans.’ A great singer and a good man. He doesn’t need the spotlight, he is comfortable hanging back. He is extremely supportive of his younger siblings, and unselfishly wants what is best for them. He and Bebe are particularly close. He suffers from heart trouble. Must have range. ROLE CAST

JIM BAKKER (Male, White, mid-late 40s) Famous televangelist and host of the PTL Club with his wife, Tammy Faye. Originally from Michigan, he met Tammy Faye at Bible College in Minnesota before they left to start a Christian TV show. He truly does love Bebe and Cece, and takes care of them like they were his children. He stands up against racist criticism of them. Later, a sex scandal ruins his reputation, and accounting fraud lands him divorced and incarcerated. ROLE CAST

TAMMY FAYE BAKKER (Female, white mid-late 40s) Famous televangelist and co-host of PTL club. Famously emotional and warm. ROLE CAST

BOB (Male, While, mid 20s-mid 40s) A singer on the PTL Club. A Christian man from North Carolina. He was raised to be a racist, and he lets those feelings take him over when Bebe and Cece steal the spotlight on the show. However, he eventually realizes the error of his ways, and apologizes for the way he has treated Bebe. Tenor or Baritone ROLE CAST
