* Note: This play will be performed in the Playhouse's intimate Shelterhouse Theatre, which is a LORT D Contract. However, the Playhouse pays more in the LORT B+ range. All of the actors beside Lee play multiple roles. We need strong, versatile, transformational actors with strong dialect skills, who can be immediately recognizable as another character.

The Playhouse describes BEHIND THE EYE as “a remarkable new play... about the life of World War II photographer Lee Miller, a woman at the center of some of the most exciting times of the 20th century. From a Vogue model in the ’20s to muse of the Paris Surrealists in the ’30s, she then became an acclaimed war photographer, covering the front lines as well as the London Blitz and the liberation of Paris. Behind the Eye chronicles Miller’s fascinating adventures and her personal struggle of what to do with yourself when you’ve done it all.”

Seeking:

Lee Miller:

Female, American, ages from 20-70 (mostly somewhere in the middle). Charismatic, intelligent, articulate leading woman, able to carry a play. Lee is emotionally complex-capable of both tenderness and cruelty. Despite her flaws, the audience must still be able to empathize with her. Author description: “(Lee) reflects light so well it seems that she herself is the source.” Actress must be comfortable with direct address to the audience. PLEASE NOTE: Right now, the script requires NUDITY (She takes a bath.) In any case, there will be NO nudity required at the auditions or callbacks.

Woman:

Probably 30s; plays Tanya(American, a young art student), Nusch (French wife of poet Paul Eluard, madcap and wonderful), Audrey (British, editor of Vogue. Crisp, sensible, great sense of humor) and Collette (the famous French author at age 71).

Man 1:

40s; plays Man Ray (American, celebrated Surrealist photographer) and Roland Penrose (British, a bit reserved but also passionate )

Man 3:

30s, middle-eastern or Mediterranean; plays The Guide (An Egyptian boy), AZIZ (An aristocratic Egyptian), Picasso, an American Soldier and a British doctor

Man 2 is CAST
