Caucasian Male; mid-30s. Promising small-town Mississippi defense attorney; smart and street-smart; loves his town, wife and four-year-old daughter. - Lead Character

Ellen Roark:

Caucasian Female; mid-20s. Bright law student, daughter of a leading Boston civil defense attorney, getting her degree at Ole Miss, winsome and admirably ambitious. – Lead Character

Carl Lee Hailey:

African American; mid-late 30s. Vietnam veteran, plays by the rules; his young daughter is raped by two rednecks. – Lead Character

Rufus Buckley:

Caucasian Male; late 30s-late 40s) “Star” prosecutor for Ford County, assured, smart, hopes to be Governor someday. – Lead Character

Lucien Wilbanks:

Caucasian Male; late 50s-60s. Liberal Southern attorney, the William Kuenstler of Mississippi, now disbarred and usually inebriated. Lead Character

Judge Omar Noose:

Caucasian Male; droll circuit court Judge, has no patience for lawyers. Crabby, drinks vodka on the bench. Early 60s. – Lead Character

Sheriff Ozzie Walls:

African American Male; late 30s. First black Sheriff ever in a predominately white Mississippi county; upholds the law equally regardless of color. Physically imposing. – Major Supporting Character.

Mister Pate:

Caucasian Male; 40s-60s. Venerable Clanton court clerk, has seen everyone come and go. – Supporting Character.

Woman #1:

Caucasian; Late 20s-early 30s. plays Carla Brigance – wife of Jake Brigance; a Southern debutante; attended Ole Miss, polished able to puncture Jake’s ego when she wants to. Supporting Role. & Drew Tyndale – a career public defender.

Woman #2:

Caucasian; plays late 30s-50s. Mrs. Cobb – Mother of Billy Ray Cobb. Push-pinned on a grid between bag lady and poor white trash. Prominently featured role. & Felicia Albright – a polished TV reporter in Jackson, Mississippi.

Man #1:

Caucasian; plays late 30s-50. Pete Willard (30’s) – poor white trash friend of Billy Ray who confesses to the crime in detail; not the brightest neon beer sign in the window. Stump Sisson (50-ish) “evangelical” racist; Imperial Wizzard of the Mississippi Klan, handsome Southern voice, filled with conviction. & Dr. Rodeheaver (40s) Runs the state mental facility; well-educated, assure, respected and a bit taken with himself. All Prominently Featured Roles.

Man #2:

Caucasian; plays 30s – 50s) Billy Ray Cobb (30s) - career criminal; murder victim. W.T. Bass (50s) - Seedy legal expert and friend of Lucien’s. Will say whatever he’s told to say; drinks too much; capable of seeming “distinguished” for short periods of time, but easily deflated. Frayed around the edges. Prominent Featured Role. Redneck – Klan member. Alert & wily.
