For one week each autumn, Mick Dowd is hired to exhume the bones in certain sections of his local cemetery to make way for the new arrivals. As the time approaches for him to dig up those of his own late wife, strange rumors regarding his involvement in her sudden death seven years ago gradually begin to resurface. Set in rural Galway (Ireland), this darkly comedic yarn conjures a macabre mystery packed with merriment, mayhem, and might-be murder that is as full of twists as a shillelagh and as haunting as a whistle in a graveyard.
SEEKING:
Note: Please be prepared with a general Irish accent. The comedy should be dry as toast.
MaryJohnny Rafferty:
To read 70s. A white-haired Irish woman. A little chunky, she has meat on her bones. An alcoholic, she likes to saunter down to Mick’s cottage after a successful night of Bingo for a few glasses of poteen. She only visits him for the free drinks. Sour, squinting, and always has her eye on Mick – she believes he killed his wife.
Mairtin Hanlon:
Late teens/early 20s. A trouble maker who enjoys fights, cooking hamsters, and pestering his older relations. As a punishment for disturbing a recent choir rehearsal, the priest has assigned Mairtin the job of helping Mick disinter the bones in the local cemetery. Stupid, dim, lovable, and charming. Easy comedic delivery. A dim box of light bulbs. He is unaffected—genuine, without airs.
Thomas Hanlon:
30s. A local cop who has aspirations to make detective, although it might be higher than his skill level. He is particularly interested in local closed cases that he feels have not been completely solved. Thinks that he should be the Chief of Police. He’s pompous and a bit of a jerk. A combination of Columbo and Barney Fife. Mairtin’s older brother.
Salary Note: Salary includes round trip train from NYC. A one-bedroom apartment no more than a 5 minute walk from the theater will be provided. Apartment has complimentary DSL.
