Lena Younger (“Mama”):
60-something, African American. Matriarch of the family. Religious, moral and conservative. Dreams of her family’s upward mobility.
Ruth Younger:
Early 30s, African American. Pragmatic. Emotionally strong, but weary.
Travis Younger:
Age 10, African American. Optimistic and playful.
Joseph Asagai:
Mid 20s, West African. Nigerian descent. Grounded. Proud of his African heritage. West African dialect.
George Murchison:
Mid 20s, African American. Privileged. True assimilationist. “Talented Tenth”.
