BREAKDOWN

A Blanket of Dust is a modern tragedy, the story of Diana Crane, the daughter of a US Senator who loses her husband in the World Trade Center — and her subsequent ordeal to seek justice for his murder. As she struggles with facts that the government, the media, her family and her countrymen deny, she is finally forced to find justice on her own. As with Antigone before her, Diana’s fidelity to her own experience leads her to the willing sacrifice of her own life on the altar of her deeply felt beliefs.

SEEKING:

DIANA CRANE (Female, 40s) Principled, elegant, spiritual-even religious. Quiet mordant humor. A stricken widow unable to reconcile her search for justice for her husband's murder with an indifferent, even hostile government and family.

SENATOR WALTER CRANE (Male, 60s) Affable, collegial, commanding establishment pillar. Diana's father and member of the Senate Intelligence Committee. Confronted with his daughter's crusade, he is faced with the decision of abandoning his daughter or his power.

ANDREW BLACK (Male, 50s) Wild, angry, revolutionary. Sometimes frighteningly scabrous humor. The son of a former CIA Director, Andrew is at war with the state and those who propagate its dominion. A true believer in popular sovereignty, he becomes Diana's lover and ally.

CHARLIE CRANE Charlie Crane (Male, 30s) Despairing, cynical, dissolute black humorist. Diana's brother and a member of the Washington DC press. He is slowly drawn into Diana's orbit by the strength of her moral conviction and sacrifices his career to her cause in the end.

VANESSA CRANE Vanessa Crane (Female, 60s) Petulant, distracted, unwittingly funny. British-born wife to Senator Walter Crane, Vanessa skirts the line between awareness and willful ignorance of the reality around her.

ADAM BLACK (Male, 60s) Bull-headed, sociopathic eminence grise. Former Director of the CIA and father to Andrew Black. The keeper of years of secrets in service to the imperial government's growth and power.

MELANIE HOBSON (Female, 30s) Open ethnicity. Disillusioned government servant, trusting and loyal, close friend to Diana. She sees the truth in the individual and the power in their action. (Doubles as Angela Cross, a paramedic)

JIM MASON (Male, 60s) Smooth, urbane, and corrupt. Neo-Conservative Policy Operative, slick and well-oiled in his presentation. (Doubles as Bill Clinton)

GIDEON LEVY (Male, 30s) Open ethnicity. Smart, witty, mercurial. Prominent DC Attorney advising Diana. Worldly, practical and sensible above all else. (Doubles as Fireman and Commando)

ESTHER BLACK (Female, 60s) Mother of Andrew Black. A beneficiary of years of power and decadence. (Doubles as Annabelle Mason, wife of Jim Mason)

AGENT STURGIS (Male or Female, 30s) Open ethnicity. Stolid, authoritarian. Typical government enforcement functionary. (Doubles as Commando/Waiter/Lieutenant)

AGENT STAULK (Male or Female, 20s) Open ethnicity. Stolid, authoritarian. Typical government enforcement functionary. (Doubles as Commando/Sergeant)
