The Arvada Center Hosts A Special WWI Event On March 14
The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities presents a special poetry event "War of Words" on March 14, 2018, at 7:30 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre. The conflicted voices of America's WWI poets spring to life in this powerful performance, written by Colorado Poet Laureate Joseph Hutchison and presented by members of the Arvada Center Black Box Repertory Company. This event is part of "Where Do We Go From Here?" - America in the First World War, a multifaceted statewide event marking the 100th anniversary of World War I. Tickets are $15. To purchase call the Arvada Center Box Office at 720-898-7200, or go online: https://arvadacenter.org/war-of-words. The Arvada Center is located at 6901 Wadsworth Blvd. and provides free parking for its patrons.
World War I inspired hope, despair, anger, anxiety, patriotic fervor, and more-all of which found its way into our most intense and powerful language, the language of poetry. In "War of Words," actors lend their voices to long-dead poets, with the aim of helping us hear them as they were: alive with conflicting passions, ideas, and beliefs shaped in response to the Great War. Audiences will find these voices not just historically intriguing, but contemporary-as if the poets are speaking both to us and for us about a war that has yet to reach its end.
The event features writing by 12 North American poets that range from the well-known-Robert Frost, Wallace Stevens, and Edith Wharton-to the lesser known-Mary Borden, Louise Driscoll, and Alice Corbin Henderson. The pieces will be presented by Repertory company members, Abner Genece, Regina Fernandez, Kate Gleason, Lance Rasmussen and Zachary Andrews. There will be a discussion afterward during which Colorado Poet Laureate Joseph Hutchison will answer questions about the performance, the history behind it, and the role of poets and poetry in wrestling with historical events.
The Arvada Center is serving as the lead for statewide events commemorating the 100th anniversary of World War I that continues through November 2018. Examining the war through the lens of the arts and the humanities, programming includes art exhibitions, poetry readings, concerts, book discussion groups, theatrical presentations, lectures, panel discussions, a film series, and more.
