Three-time Grammy Award-winning jazz percussionist Antonio Sanchez will perform with special guests Kenny Werner and Scott Colley at the Garde Arts Center's Oasis Room on Saturday, May 1, at 8 p.m. The performance is presented in association with Kitchings Productions.

Considered by critics and musicians alike as one of the most prominent international jazz drummers of his generation, Sanchez has performed and recorded with some of the biggest names in the jazz industry including Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Charlie Haden, Gary Burton and Toots Thielmans.

Born and raised in Mexico City, Sanchez started playing drums at the age of five and began playing professionally early in his teens. He pursued a degree in classical piano at the National Conservatory in Mexico before moving on to Boston where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in jazz studies at the Berklee College of Music. He went on to earn a master's degree in jazz improvisation from the New England Conservatory.

While playing opposite Pat Metheny's trio, the legendary guitarist took notice of Sanchez's drumming and offered the drum chair for the Pat Metheny Group. The band has recorded two albums since Sanchez's addition including the 2003 Grammy winning "Speaking of Now," for the "Best Contemporary Jazz Album" category. Sanchez currently is a faculty member for jazz studies at New York University.

For his Oasis Room performance Sanchez will be joined by jazz pianist Kenny Werner and bassist Scott Colley.

Tickets for the Antonio Sanchez Trio are $35 and are available at the Garde Box Office, 325 State St., New London, Conn. The Garde Box Office is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and two hours prior to the curtain on performance days. Tickets may be purchased by phone during regular box office hours at (860) 444-7373, ext. 1, or online at www.gardearts.org.
