BWW Reviews: Perceptions of Art Duel in Weathervane's I HATE HAMLET
by Paul Batterson - June 25, 2018
As any English teacher can tell you, not everyone loves Shakespeare. For some it's like eating Brussels sprouts; it's something you know you should do but you aren't certain why and you certainly don't enjoy the process.
Photo Coverage: First Look at Actor's Theatre of Columbus' FRANKENSTEIN
by Jerri Shafer - June 23, 2018
Appearing on the English stage only five years after Mary Shelley's groundbreaking novel Frankenstein; or the Modern Prometheus, Richard Brinsley Peake's Frankenstein, or the Dangers of Presumption is the first adaptation of that venerable novel. Peake's monster is an early version of the horror that would star in more than 50 films in the last 100 years. Performed in the style of classic melodrama, including song, lovers, and spectacle, Peake's stage adaptation was the only version Shelley attended, an event which she recounted in a letter to her father, stating, "I was much amused!" Frankenstein was such a hit in the theaters that the publisher of Shelley's novel produced a second edition, and the place of that novel in the English canon was secured. Several stage imitators followed in the decade after Peake's 1823 play, but this play endures as the original stage version of Frankenstein. Performances are June 21 - July 15, 2018. Thursdays through Sundays @ 8pm. Schiller Park (German Village), Amphitheatre Stage, Columbus, Ohio. For information on donations and seat reservations, visit http://theactorstheatre.org

BWW Review: SNS Puts a Unique Stamp on Sondheim's ASSASSINS
by Paul Batterson - June 03, 2018
There's enormous pressure in reviewing the Short North Stage's most recent production, ASSASSINS. Imagine looking out onto the stage where John Wilkes Booth brandishes a pistol at the audience only a few feet away while the balladeer (Patrick Beasley) sings, 'Some say it was your voice had gone, some say it was the booze. Some say you killed a country, John, because of bad reviews' in the song 'The Ballad of Booth.'

Photo Coverage: First look at Evolution Theatre Company's ELECTRICITY
by Jerri Shafer - May 30, 2018
A Columbus native, Mr. Ray comes home performing in the Midwest premiere of his new play. Starring Terry Ray and Ralph Scott. Directed by Mark Phillips Schwamberger. Sex, drugs and booze make up the life of Brad Burke, while ex-seminary student Gary Henderson is so closeted that he hides his sexuality behind an invented wife. This unlikely pair hook up in a motel room after their 10-year high school reunion and it's a monumental clash of worlds that sparks an 'electricity' between them that lures them back to that same motel room after each reunion for the next 3 decades. Electricity is a very funny, sexy and surprisingly emotional journey through the immense changes that happened to the LGBTQ community between 1983 and 2013. It navigates a world where gay life was hidden in bars and sex clubs to one where equality might just be a reality--if Gary and Brad can only believe that they deserve it. Performances are May 30th thru June 9th at 8:00 pm and Matinee Sunday November 12th at 2:00 pm. Columbus Performing Arts Center, 549 Franklin Avenue, Columbus, OH 43215. For tickets or more information, visit: http://evolutiontheatre.org/

BWW Review: THE BOOK OF MORMON Returns to Columbus and They're Still Something Incredible
by Christina Mancuso - May 27, 2018
Hello, again.  Columbus was glutton for punishment when THE BOOK OF MORMON returned to the Ohio Theatre for another blasphemous yet gut-wrenchingly hilarious week of musical theatre genius.  This time, the audience was snickering and giggling while they shuffled in their seats before the show even began. They knew they were about to embark on a show that can say "F-You, God" and still have the Mormon church take out a full page ad in the Playbill.  This is the brilliance of South Park writers, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, along with AVENUE Q co-creator Robert Lopez, who can cleverly win over people of all faith by poking fun at the Mormons with crass language that borders sacrilege. Why? Because at its core is a heartfelt story of brotherhood and self-discovery with lovable young men finding their way in a world ruled by uniformity and restriction.
