It is that time of year when the holiday shows are beginning in theatres all over the country. Some shows put us in the holiday spirit by singing catchy tunes such as "Holly Jolly Christmas" or "Frosty the Snowman." Others tell classic tales such as A Christmas Carol or 'Twas the Night before Christmas. In addition, some shows remind us about the true meaning of Christmas by telling the story of the First Christmas. The 2013 CHRISTMAS SHOW: THE FIRST NOEL at American Music Theatre does all of this, and they do it well.

The stage at American Music Theatre has been turned into a winter wonderland, and audience members will feel the Christmas spirit from this show. The cast is talented, the costumes are beautiful and festive, and the music will have you humming along. The first act of the show reminded me of the Christmas specials I grew up with on television. The ones where artists like, Bing Crosby or John Denver, sang with their friends or "TV" family, and there was always a beautifully decorated tree and fireplace adorned with garland and stockings. This is the setting director, Andrea McCormick, has recreated. The first act reminds audiences of the family tradition of Christmas. The second act begins with a merry little tale about Santa and his elves, and by the end, the show presents the audience with the Story of the First Christmas. The show smoothly transitions between these stories and it contains classic holiday songs that will warm your heart and put you in the Christmas spirit.

The cast is a remarkable group of performers, and there are a few standout numbers that need mentioning. "Put a Little Holiday in Your Heart" is sung by Julie Keough, and she is strong in her vocals throughout the show. "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" is a very fun and entertaining number, and I enjoyed Ric Zimmerman in this scene. This song is the highlight of the first act. "The Polar Express" number is energetic and Michael Austin is lively and spirited in this song. In addition, "I Believe in Father Christmas" is the best company number in the production. Finally, the band feature in the production is "Wizards in Winter" and this piece comes complete with a dazzling holiday light show. THE 2013 CHRISTMAS SHOW: THE FIRST NOEL is a delightful production that will put anyone in the holiday spirit.

One more group that needs mentioning is the artistic team. Andrea McCormick and Matthew V. Gotwalt designed the beautiful costumes. The Lighting Designer is Sean Williams. In addition Andy Roberts serves as the Musical Director.

THE 2013 CHRISTMAS SHOW: THE FIRST NOEL is at American Music Theatre through December 30, 2013. For more information and tickets visit their website at www.amtshows.com or call their box office at (717)397-7700.
