Photo Flash: John Minnock And Dave Liebman Hit the Stage At Feinstein's/54 Below
On Saturday, March 16th, new-breed vocalist John Minnock joined forces with NEA Jazz Master and Grammy-nominee Dave Liebman to perform selections from "Right Around the Corner", John's new album, at Feinstein's/54 Below. Pianist Enrique Haneine, bassist Carlos Mena and drummer Pablo Eluchans filled out the ensemble. Minnock's new "gay ahead jazz album" presents LGBTQ subject matter in a jazz setting.
For his debut performance at the storied venue, Minnock performed an outstanding 90 minute set to a full house. Highlights included the affecting ballad "Are We All Alone"; a Minnock original which tackles the complicated feelings that come with a new relationship, and the Jay Brannon-penned "New York, New York", which prominently featured Liebman and the smoking rhythm section. The audience was clearly enraptured and offered up a thunderous chorus of applause. Minnock did Lady Day proud with his rendition of "You Don't Know What Love Is" and performed a literally breathtaking version of "I Love Being Here With You" at the speed of light. Minnock's signature wit and candor was on display on "Everything Changes", another original composition that explores the changes that take place when two established people enter into a new relationship. It was a refreshing snapshot into contemporary gay life that is not often portrayed on the bandstand. At 54 Below, Minnock's outstanding technical ability, paired with evocative lyrics and superb showmanship proved that he is a dynamic musical force to be reckoned with in New York City.
Minnock looks forward to returning to 54 Below in the future.
