The Miami Beach-based singer Nicole Henry continues her run of sold-out, monthly concerts at the Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd Street, with her next three shows on Friday April 23, Friday May 14, Friday June 18, all at 9:45pm. The three concerts - her 11th 12th, and 13th since taking up residence at the club in 2009 - will be a prelude to a brand new act in which the jazz and R&B songstress will introduce a collection of new tunes from a forthcoming album she plans to record in the spring and summer, and introduce with a week-long engagement at the Metropolitan Room.
Henry, who generously embraces jazz, pop and R&B in her sets, receives this year's Bistro Award for Outstanding Jazz Vocalist on April 13. Her New York following, which draws a unique blend of jazz and cabaret connoisseurs, has been growing by the month. When she appeared at the most recent Mabel Mercer Cabaret Convention at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Henry was one of two singers to be brought back out for additional curtain calls by the convention's appreciative audience. Writing in The New York Times in February, Stephen Holden observed: "The gifted Florida singer has become one of the top attractions at the Metropolitan Room." He went on to add: "She phrases songs with a freewheeling sense of play that never loses sight of the subject at hand."Henry's New York-based sidemen included Alvester Garnett on drums and Richie Goods on bass. Her pianists in New York have included Gotham locals John DiMartino and Helen Sung. And offering sartorial support is none other than fashion designer Nicole Miller, who dreams up a different Nicole Henry look for every show.Videos
