Nicole Henry To Perform At The Met Room Through June

By:

The Miami Beach-based singer Nicole Henry continues her run of sold-out, monthly concerts at the Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd Street, with her next two shows on Friday May 14, Friday June 18, both at 9:45pm. The three concerts - her 11th 12th, and 13th since taking up residence at the club in 2009 - will be a prelude to a brand new act in which the jazz and R&B songstress will introduce a collection of new tunes from a forthcoming album she plans to record in the spring and summer, and introduce with a week-long engagement at the Metropolitan Room.

Henry, who generously embraces jazz, pop and R&B in her sets, receives this year's Bistro Award for Outstanding Jazz Vocalist on April 13. Her New York following, which draws a unique blend of jazz and cabaret connoisseurs, has been growing by the month. When she appeared at the most recent Mabel Mercer Cabaret Convention at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Henry was one of two singers to be brought back out for additional curtain calls by the convention's appreciative audience. Writing in The New York Times in February, Stephen Holden observed: "The gifted Florida singer has become one of the top attractions at the Metropolitan Room." He went on to add: "She phrases songs with a freewheeling sense of play that never loses sight of the subject at hand."

Henry's New York-based sidemen included Alvester Garnett on drums and Richie Goods on bass. Her pianists in New York have included Gotham locals John DiMartino and Helen Sung. And offering sartorial support is none other than fashion designer Nicole Miller, who dreams up a different Nicole Henry look for every show.

A featured in-flight artist for Delta Airlines, Henry's three top-selling recordings date back to her solo debut "The Nearness of You" (2004), which reached #2 on the HMV Japan Jazz Charts where it stayed in the top 10 for three months. Her follow-up CD, "Teach Me Tonight," with the Eddie Higgins Trio, reached #1 on HMV Japan, and earned their top honor, Best Vocal Jazz Album of 2005. Her latest CD, "The Very Thought of You," produced by Hal Batt and Don Mizell (who served as executive creative producer), reached #7 on Billboard's Jazz Chart in 2008. Henry's upcoming album, her fourth, will introduce a distinctive, modern blend of jazz, R&B and adult contemporary and jazz.

Nicole Henry's next three Metropolitan Room one-night stands are Friday April 23, at 9:45pm; Friday May 14 at 9:45; Friday June 18 at 9:45pm. The cover charge is $30 (plus a two-drink minimum). For reservations call 212/206-0440 or visit www.metropolitanroom.com for more information or to pre-pay online.

Rated "Best of New York" by New York Magazine in 2008, the Nightlife and Bistro Award-winning Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd Street, celebrates its fourth anniversary in May.
