Melanie Stace Makes New York Concert Debut at the Metropolitan Room

By:

The British TV star Melanie Stace makes her New York concert debut at the Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd Street, beginning Thursday July 7. Acclaimed for her roles on the West End, British television, and, for five seasons in Seattle and San Francisco in "Teatro ZinZanni," Stace premieres a new show "Steppin' Out," backed by a four-piece band led by the pianist and music director Doug Oberhamer. "Steppin' Out's" exclusive three-show, three-week engagement plays Thursday July 7 at 7pm, Thursday July 14 at 7pm, and Saturday July 23 at 9:30pm.

A widely recognized television personality in her native Britain, Stace alternates between concerts and theatre on the West Coast and in London. Thanks to six seasons as a co-presenter of BBC Television's popular The Generation Game, and on The Royal Variety Performance (also on the BBC), Stace has been a much-in-demand presence on television, in national tours ("Crazy for You," and the Olivier Award-winning "Hot Shoe Shuffle") and on the West End as Lola in Barry Manilow's "Copacabana."

Since 2005 she has returned as a star of the popular nightclub spectacle "Teatro ZinZanni" in both Seattle and San Francisco. In the City by the Bay, Stace has also headlined at The Rrazz Room and The Empire Plush Room. The San Francisco Chronicle calls her "enormously appealing."

"Steppin' Out" features a widely eclectic repertoire of songs that swing liberally between contemporary and vintage musical and show business reference points. From James Taylor to Irving Berlin and Doris Fisher, to Billy Joel and Billie Holiday, Harry Connick Jr., Vernon Duke, Leon Russell and, of all things, Odyssey, Stace brings a nightclub/big band sensibility to songs that she says are "musically and emotionally all over the map." Her quartet, led by Doug Oberhamer, includes Greg Chudzik on bass, Tony Romano on guitar, and Eric Halvorson on drums.

"Steppin' Out," Melanie Stace's New York calling card, performs three nights only -- Thursday July 7 at 7pm, Thursday July 14 at 7pm, and Saturday July 23 at 9:30pm. The music charge is $20. For reservations call 212/206-0440. For more information or to order online visit www.metropolitanroom.com
