Friday, May 7 at 7:00 PM

Internationally known poet, performer, writer, and musician Joy Harjo writes and performs her first piece for the theater. This one-woman, allegorical play re-imagines the creation myth through a precociously sensitive heroine- the child of a Cherokee waitress and an alcoholic Creek father. The piece received its first reading in 2008 at The Public's Native Theater Festival before going on to a run at Native Voices in Los Angeles. Joining her is Grammy-award winning guitarist and producer Larry Mitchell.

Joy Harjo is a member of the Mvskoke Nation. Her poetry collections have garnered many awards including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Native Writers Circle of the Americas and the William Carlos Williams Award from the Poetry Society of America. She is a founding member of the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation and writes a column for her tribal newspaper, the Muscogee Nation News. As a musician, she has recorded four CDs and won a NAMMY award for Female Artist of the Year.

RANDY REINHOLZ (Choctaw) is Producing Artistic Director and Co-Creator of Native Voices at the Autry. He has directed over fifty plays internationally including the critically acclaimed premiere production of Wings of Night Sky, Wings of Morning Light, at Native Voices at the Autry with performances at the Alaska Native Heritage Center and The Public Theater. A member of The National Theatre Conference, Mr. Reinholz is on the Advisory Committee for the Native Theater Festival at The Public Theater.

Wings of Night Sky, Wings of Morning Light is a program of The Public Theater's Native Theater Initiative. NEW WORK NOW! will run May 7-23 with 10 readings of news plays in The Public's Martinson Theater. MAY 21 - MAY 23

TAYLOR MAC

Friday & Saturday, May 21 & 22 at 7;00 PM

"One of the most exciting theater artists of our time." - Time Out New York

"Intellectually arduous and beautifully realized" - Hilton Als, The New Yorker

Could belief be overrated? Performing artist Taylor Mac flirts with the disengagement of belief in this theatrical concert (with band). Expect covers, brand new originals, songs from his epic "The Lily's Revenge", and the obligatory truckload of glitter. $20

Lady Rizo: unescorted

Fridays, May 21 & June 25 at 9:30 PM

"The brazen blonde belts out classics and pop tunes atop a piano" -- Women's Wear Daily

"Caburlesque artist Lady Rizo has, thankfully, upped the ante... throwing in enough hyperfemininity to blow your heart and go down on your mind." - Sharyn Jackson, Village Voice

"Lady Rizo and The Assettes brought down the house."- Men's Vogue

"Rizo's mischievous grin and banter hold the audience captive." - NY Press

"adorably louche"-- Time Out

"Lady Rizo bring(s) out the Broadway in this chart-topper" --Rolling Stone

The incomparable "cabaret star" (NY Magazine) Lady Rizo is back for an unchaperoned evening of song and decadence. You may have seen her here at Joe's Pub with her "glam bottom baring dance troupe the Assettes " (Village Voice), celebrating the billboard top ten in the monthly series Our Hit Parade, or midtown at the gothic Night Hotel co-hosting the weekly transnational lounge Foreign Affairs.

But here is your chance to have her all to yourself. Her seamless mix of bawdy humor and elegance has been likened to Mae West but it's her vocal chops that have garnered recent attention: collaborating with both Yo-Yo Ma & Moby on albums this year, singing selections of the American Songbook in front of the internationally acclaimed 36 -piece orchestra The Knights, and at MOMA for a sold out cabaret for the Kirchner Exhibit.

Let her lashes beguile you as she interprets an irresistible mix of popular songs from all eras backed by some of the finest musicians in New York City. Even though she is venturing out solo, if you know Lady Rizo you won't be surprised if a couple special guests pop up. $15

AVAN LAVA

Friday, May 21 at MIDNIGHT
Born in 2009 in New York City, AVAN LAVA is the union of singer Tom Hennes and musician Le Chev (Michael Laine Cheever). Tom sings and Le Chev makes music.

After touring the globe playing bass and DJ'ing with Fischerspooner on their "Entertainment" tour, Le Chev began collaborating with Tom, a singer with a performance background in NYC, to create the debut release by AVAN LAVA, an EP entitled Vapors. Initially working with borrowed computers and equipment, they built the songs in basements and friends' studios in New York City. Prior to the EP's completion, the duo were signed by Faux Pyre Records, and flown to Los Angeles for mixing and mastering sessions at the prestigious Infrasonic Sound Studio with audio wizard Pete Lyman (The Mars Volta, No Age, Bloc Party). $12

TURIN BRAKES: ACOUSTIC
Saturday, May 22 at 9:30 PM
It has been more than ten years since Turin Brakes released their first record. The anniversary was a time for celebration and reflection - a reminder of how far the South London duo have come and of what made them such a great act in the first place. It was also time to make a new album, a process which has brought Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian full circle.

Having redefined the acoustic pop genre with their debut album, The Optimist LP, which was short-listed for the Mercury Music Prize in 2001, the pair went on to release a string of superlative collections which saw them gradually expand on their original sound and vision. By the time of their last album, Dark On Fire, produced by Ethan Johns, the acoustic troubadours had turned into a fully-fledged, plugged-in, soft-rock band.

Now, with their new album, Outbursts, Olly and Gale have rediscovered the working practices that got them started in the first place, and with it their old sense of mission. Written, produced and (for the most part) performed entirely by the two of them, Outbursts is a collection of songs that returns to the essence of Turin Brakes, and not only echoes the quiet, edgy genius of their most celebrated work, but surpasses it. $22
