Mike Errico'S ANNUAL HOLIDAY SHOW
Thursday, December 16 at 7:30 PM; $20

On December 16th, acclaimed writer and performer Mike Errico will return to Joe's Pub for his annual Holiday Show. A highlight of Errico's touring calendar, the annual Holiday Show will feature old favorites, and also introduce new material from his as-yet unreleased new album. In keeping with a long-standing Holiday Show tradition, Mike will distribute gifts, known to the loyal as "Holiday Omens," to each audience member. Recipients will be invited to interpret the Omen's personal significance in the coming year. Hilarious, poignant or cautionary, the Omens have proven to be alarmingly accurate.

"The Holiday Show is my favorite-it allows me to connect with my fans, many whom have been with me for a long time," Mike says. "I love the songs from the new album, and of course, there's nothing more gratifying than playing a song and hearing people singing along." The evening concludes another prolific year for the New York City native.

Tony will be accompanied by his band of exceptional musicians and their set will include the additional feature of some original tunes from Tony's upcoming album, currently being recorded.

The incomparable "cabaret star" (NY Magazine) Lady Rizo is back for an unchaperoned evening of song and decadence. You may have seen her here at Joe's Pub with her "glam bottom baring dance troupe the Assettes " (Village Voice), celebrating the billboard top ten in the monthly series Our Hit Parade, or midtown at the gothic Night Hotel co-hosting the weekly transnational lounge Foreign Affairs.

But here is your chance to have her all to yourself. Her seamless mix of bawdy humor and elegance has been likened to Mae West but it's her vocal chops that have garnered recent attention: collaborating with both Yo-Yo Ma & Moby on albums this year, singing selections of the American Songbook in front of the internationally acclaimed 36 -piece orchestra The Knights, and at MOMA for a sold out cabaret for the Kirchner Exhibit.

THE THIRD ANNUAL VERY BALTHROP CHRISTMAS

It's the holiday season again; seems like it happens every year about this time. Big whoop and a bah humbug to you and yours. But, no, wait - this year, the town of Balthrop, Alabama is returning to Joe's Pub to shake a little dust off the plastic Christmas tree and put a pucker back below the mistletoe. Nearly everyone in the village has written a brand new song and we've asked a few of our neighbors to try their hand at creating a holiday humdinger too - luckily Balthrop, Alabama is a right talented small town, located in a corner of Christmas Carroll Gardens. The night promises to be an evening of seasonal surprises with special guests and new classics, all of it accompanied live on the big screen by town drawer, Toxey Goodwater (nee Michael Arthur). It's a holiday Chalk Talk for the 21st Century, great tunes and a live drawing display that, when combined, will dazzle and amaze!

Michael Arthur is the archival artist of Joe's Pub, drawing the performers during their sets and sound-checks. Michael uses no pencils and no rough drafts in his work; each drawing is a live reaction to the moment.

For the last couple of years, Michael has been resurrecting and reconceiving the Vaudeville Talk and Chalk, his drawing pad, hand and pen projected live behind musicians and dancers, creating a visual accompaniment and backdrop to the music. He has performed with the Indianapolis Symphony in Indiana and Buglisi Dance Theater at The Joyce Theater.

In 2006, Alabama-born songwriter-siblings Pascal and Lauren Balthrop moved to New York City to start a band and ended up founding a town. Balthrop, Alabama, population 11 or so, is their bustling folk rock township.

Musically, the band straddles the fine line between antebellum and antifolk, reconstructing indie pop with songs of love, dead people, and dead people in love. One fan described the town's genre as "barnyard epic indie rock." In 2007, they released their double-album debut, Your Big Plans and Our Little Town, on the nascent End Up label, followed by a series of EPs: the rebellious God Loves My Country and the companion records Subway Songs and Cowboy Songs. The town is doing its third national tour this summer. A full list of tour dates can be found on the band's website.

Mike Doughty
Saturday, December 18 at 9:30 PM; $25

When Mike Doughty released his second official solo album, 2008's Golden Delicious, the reaction from fans was intense. "Some hated it, some loved it better than Soul Coughing," Doughty says. "I tend to take sharp left turns. Every time I put out a record, the audience seems to like what I did two years ago better. You'd think I could shrug it off because that's what always happens, but it always gets to me."

Doughty admits that his latest album, Sad Man Happy Man - released last October - is a reaction to his fans' reaction and that he's giving the people what they want. "I really went for the ‘na-na-na's' and the simple choruses and stuff on Golden," he says. "The songs on Sad Man are more arcane and convoluted songwriting-wise, though they're sparer in terms of instrumentation. Although my choruses are still simple - I love taking phrases and repeating them ad infinitum."

Doughty maintains a widely read blog that chronicles his unique shows, international travels, and creative endeavors. He's currently writing a memoir, recording an electronic album entitled Dubious Luxury, and working on a photo book about Eritrea's capital city of Asmara, for Yeti Books. He also recently published a play, Ray Slape is Dead, in 24 by 24: The 24 Hour Plays Anthology, alongside Terrence McNally and Theresa Rebeck.

"Basically I'm trying to make stuff I want to listen to," he says of the album. "And I mean that in a literal sense, not like, "Were I a listener, I would like this," but rather something I can listen to on the subway on headphones and really dig. This is my life, this is what I do. That sounds matter-of-fact, but I really do look at it as a sort of calling - and being an artist at its best is selfless. I'm working for the language, I'm working for the music, I'm working for the songs. I'm a happier guy when I'm conscious of that."

Mor Dior is a prince, originating from one of the most famous families of royal Griots, "BourGuewels" of Senegal. At a very early stage in his life he made himself known as both an actor and singer. He was noticed by the Director of the Academy of Music and chosen to become lead vocalist for the local band I.N.A.S.

He stayed four years with the group sharing the stage with big names on the African music scene like, Manu Dibango, "Soul Makossa", El Maestro Laba Sosseh, Bocana Maiga, Aicha Kone, Francois Louga and Harry Belafonte. During those exciting years he also came into contact with International Artists performing in Dakar such as, Jimmy Cliff, Mick Jagger, Johnny Halliday, Burning Spear, Stevie Wonder and many others. Mor Dior Bamba is back. He is back with his band of professional musicians.
