THE John Davis CARAVAN CELEBRATES Mark Twain

Monday, June 7 at 7:00 PM

"Pianist John Davis has made a mission of uncovering music by 19th-century black pianists, including slaves, whose work had a direct impact on the blues, jazz, rock, and R&B artists that came in their wake. So far his Caravan has made stops for the music of Blind Boone and Blind Tom, resulting in critical adulation." - Time Out New York

Roots music pianist, John Davis, returns to Joe's Pub sporting a brand new Newport Classic CD. EntitlEd Halley's Comet: Around the Piano with Mark Twain & John Davis, this new recording pays musical tribute to America's most famous author, Mark Twain, whose career, like Davis', lies at the intersection between white and black culture and high and low culture in American society. Released one hundred years to the day since Twain's death on April 21st, 1910, Halley's Comet also honors the 175th anniversary of Twain's birth and the 125th anniversary of the publication of his most influential book, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, all being celebrated in 2010. At Joe's Pub, Davis will perform pieces from the CD with connections to Twain, interspersed with readings of often hilarious, sometimes appalling, and always fascinating quotations from Twain and his contemporaries. And don't be surprised if Davis plays Twain-related works from John Davis Plays Blind Tom and Marshfield Tornado: John Davis Plays Blind Boone, his two earlier, critically-acclaimed, hit Newport Classic recordings that have defined, excavated, and disseminated a previously-unacknowledged American roots music. $17

GEOFFREY GURRUMUL YUNUPINGU

Tuesday, June 15 at 9:30 PM

Singer-songwriter Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu will release his eponymous solo debut album Gurrumul via Dramatico Entertainment on June 15. Gurrumul is the first indigenous Australian solo artist to breakthrough to the mainstream with audiences and critics responding passionately to the album. Gurrumul went double-platinum, earned exceptional reviews and four ARIA Award nominations (including the coveted Male Artist of the Year and Album of the Year). A stunning collection of 12 songs, Gurrumul emphasizes the importance of ancestry, country and land.

The Northern Territory native, blind from birth, grew up as a member of the Gumatj clan on Elcho Island, off the coast of tropical North East Arnhem Land. In his culture, the elders are the spokespersons for the clan. But the self-effacing Gurrumul, as he likes to be known, doesn't have to say anything at all; the songs on his self-titled debut speak volumes. As the Sydney Morning Herald declared, when Gurrumul was first released in Australia, "There is something so timeless and so direct, it is impossible to remain unmoved. It is as though Yunupingu has reached into a wellspring so deep it transcends cultural barriers...This is not just a very good record, it is one of the greatest records ever made by a local indigenous musician." $15

MARY GAUTHIER
Wednesday, June 16 at 7:00 PM
Since her debut in 1997, critics have consistently heralded Gauthier. Her breakthrough album, Mercy Now (2005) was continuously "discovered" and lauded for the two years following its release, earning mentions on a score of year-end "best of" lists in ‘05, including the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune and No Depression. Her most recent release, Between Daylight and Dark (2007) has been called "...a triumph that should catapult her to the forefront of Americana singer/songwriters," by Paste Magazine. Describing her new album, The Foundling, Gauthier says "I was born to an unwed mother in 1962 and subsequently surrendered to St. Vincent's Women and Infants Asylum on Magazine Street in New Orleans, where I spent my first year. I was adopted shortly thereafter but left my adopted family at fifteen. I wandered for years looking for, but never quite finding a place that felt like home. I searched for, found, and was denied a meeting with my birth mother when I was 45 years old. She couldn't afford to re-open the wound she'd carried her whole life, the wound of surrendering a baby. The Foundling is my story." The Foundling, to be released May 18, was produced by Michael Timmins of Cowboy Junkies. $25

JUSTIN CURRIE

Thursday, June 17 at: 9:30 &11:30 PM

On his second solo album, The Great War, Justin Currie delivers a bracing set of original compositions that break new creative ground while maintaining the standards of sterling songcraft and pointed lyrical insight that he established with Scottish folk-popsters Del Amitri.

As that band's lead singer, bassist and main songwriter, Currie built a formidable body of work that showcased his knack for melding infectious melodies and barbed lyrics. He's continued to make accessible yet challenging music in his solo career, which he launched with 2007's widely acclaimed What Is Love For.

Justin Currie has plenty of experience in defying musical expectations. He was still in his teens when he co-founded Del Amitri in his hometown of Glasgow. Between 1982 and 2002, the band evolved from resourceful D.I.Y. indie combo to international hitmakers, releasing six much-loved studio albums before amicably parting ways. $15
