Harlem Stage Hosts Music and Spoken Word Events for May, Now thru 5/16

Harlem Stage is hosting music events tonight, May 8-10 including original and tribute artists, as well as an open mic night on May 16. All of the music events are presented as part of the Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival 2013 which is produced by Harlem Stage, Jazzmobile and The Apollo Theater, in collaboration with Columbia University.

Erimaj and Fabian Almazan

Wednesday, May 8 at 7:30pm at the Harlem Stage Gatehouse, 150 Convent Avenue (at West 135th St.)

Tickets: $10 General

This cutting-edge double bill features two exceptional rising young stars - drummer extraordinaire Jamire Williams, who is charting new territory with his ensemble ERIMAJ, hot off their critically-praised debut release, Conflict of a Man; and Fabian Almazan, considered one of the most thrilling young jazz pianists on the scene, who debuts at Harlem Stage with a special string project.

Moseka House: The House That Abbey Built

Thursday and Friday, May 9 and 10 at 7:30pm at the Harlem Stage Gatehouse, 150 Convent Avenue (at West 135th St.)

Tickets: $10 General

Marc Cary's "Moseka House: The House That Abbey Built" is a two-night celebration of American jazz vocalist Abbey Lincoln by Harlem Stage favorite Marc Cary who was Lincoln's former pianist and arranger. On night one Cary interprets Lincoln's compositions in solo and in trio format with his Focus Trio; on the second night, Cary on solo piano accompanies vocalists Kiyem Ade, Maggie Brown, Pyeng Threadgill, and Imani Uzuri as they pay homage to "the house that Abbey built."

Tickets: $5 for Adults, FREE for Teens!

Harlem Stage's monthly open mic series is run by youth for youth, with youth DJs, hosts, and a monthly-featured poet. Three years strong, their partnership with Urban Word NYC continues with Uptown Open. This monthly open mic series for teens is a safe, uncensored space for poets, spoken word artists, M.C.s, scholars and activists to share their powerful and important voices. Presented in partnership with Urban Word NYC.
