GARIN & MILLIT Bring Sleepless In September To The Met Room, Begins 9/6
By: Gabrielle Sierra
The Drama Desk Award-winning singer-songwriter Michael Garin, who's been a piano bar fixture in New York for more than two decades, teams up with singer-comedienne Mardie Millit for a month of Mondays at the Metropolitan Room, beginning September 6. The duo, who have been described "Steve and Eydie on acid" (their playful banter is often compared to early Nichols and May), perform weekly at Elaine's, where they have appeared for the past two years. At the Metropolitan Room, Garin and Millit premiere their new show, "Sleepless in September," which plays four consecutive Mondays, September 6, 13, 20 and 27, all at 7pm.
The show, so named to exploit Garin's role as a composer-lyricist for the upcoming Broadway-bound musical "Sleepless in Seattle," brings together a dizzyingly eclectic mix of American and international standards, with a sprinkling of goofy Garin-penned classics which he's honed over the years as resident piano man at The Monkey Bar, The Rainbow Room, Café Feenjon and the notorious VIP Room at Limelight. The actress Keira Naughton serves as the show's stage director."Sleepless in September" features absolutely no songs from the upcoming Broadway tuner with the misleadingly similar name, lest Garin welcome getting himself sued. "Sleepless in Seattle," which is aiming for a Valentine's Day Broadway opening in 2011, has music and lyrics co-written by Garin. For the record Garin's last high-profile musical on the boards since he co-wrote and co-starred in the early 90's Off-Broadway cult phenomenon "Song of Singapore," for which he won (co-writing and performing) both the Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk awards.Videos
