James Braly Visits Aspen For LIFE IN A MARITAL INSTITUTION

By:

Tickets are now on sale for the Theatre Aspen and the Wheeler Opera House presentation of LIFE IN A MARITAL INSTITUTION (20 years of monogamy in one terrifying hour), starring "This American Life" contributor James Braly. The acclaimed monologist, likened to a new Spalding Gray, comes to Aspen following his sold-out runs in New York City and Philadelphia, to perform his darkly comic tale of attraction, repulsion, death, and the afterlife for one performance. The show will be held during Aspen's popular President's Day weekend on Saturday, February 18, at 8 p.m.

Former TODAY show anchor Meredith Vieira is producing LIFE IN A MARITAL INSTITUTION with her producing partner Amy Rapp through her Production Company Meredith Vieira Productions. It is their first legit effort. He has performed autobiographical stories at New York's Whitney Museum, Long Wharf Theatre, and The Moth, where he was featured on the TNT National Story Tour. His full-length monologue, Asylum, recently premiered at Dixon Place.

Life in a Marital Institution, premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, toured nationally last year after playing more than 120 performances in New York City. An autobiographical comedy, it cuts back and forth between the deathbed wedding of Braly's sister, and his own hilarious marital adventures of more than 20 tumultuous years. Director is Hal Brooks, who directed Nilaja Sun's No Child and was the Creative Consultant on Colin Quinn's recent Broadway show Long Story Short. Optioned for film and television by Meredith Vieira Productions, with Braly as the writer, Life…is also a forthcoming memoir from St. Martin's Press.

The Wheeler Opera House's Aspen Laff Festival follows on February 22 – 25 featuring Bobcat Goldthwait, David Brenner Ben Bailey – the Cash Cab Guy, and more. Visit wheeleroperahouse.com for more details.

Theatre Aspen just received three Denver Post Ovation Award nominations, for Best Actress, Best Young Actor and Best Multimedia Integration. In 2009, Theatre Aspen was awarded the "Outstanding Regional Theatre" Henry Award and Alison Luff won a Best Supporting Actress Denver Post Ovation Award.

Tickets for Life in a Marital Institution are $30 and can be purchased at the Wheeler Box Office by calling 970-920-5770 or online at aspenshowtix.com. For further information, visit www.theatreaspen.org.
