Roaring Camp Railroads has taken visitors through the Santa Cruz Mountains since 1963 and has the engines stoked to celebrate its 50 th anniversary. For decades, its mother-daughter railroad team has operated two lines with trains departing daily from its historic station and re-created 1880s mill town, Roaring Camp. Whether steaming up narrow-gauge tracks past rare groves of old-growth California redwoods or rambling along the San Lorenzo River to the bustling Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, Roaring Camp Railroads invites passengers to come and celebrate its 50 th anniversary with a year-round lineup of historic reenactments, music festivals, themed rides and aGolden Anniversary Celebration June 8 9, 2013.
"We're celebrating 50 years of memories," said Roaring Camp Railroad CEO Melani Clark. "We want folks to reconnect with the railroad this year. If their children haven't explored Roaring Camp, we want to wow them. And for those who have yet to take a ride with us, we want them to experience why our family decided 50 years ago to preserve this piece of history in the Santa Cruz Mountains."
History comes to life at Roaring Camp, with free heritage activities like gold panning, blacksmithing, period music, historic films in the Boxcar Theater, candle-making workshops and visits with the Town Marshal. After a scenic ride, passengers can hike nearby trails lined with redwoods and then kick their feet up at the Chuckwagon Barbeque or Red Caboose restaurant for a hearty serving of Americana.
