Bicycle Adventures Woos Sun Seekers, Casual-to-Avid Cyclists to Hawaii's Big Island

By: Jan. 22, 2014

The leader in North America bike tours, Bicycle Adventures, woos active sun seekers who are casual-to-avid cyclists to Hawaii's Big Island with week-long programs at two price points and a third program for families.

This Seattle-based company has 20 years of experience showcasing this region to guests. Bicycle Adventures' (http://bicycleadventures.com/) focus is on the Big Island where, reports Todd Starnes, owner, the appeal is the island's diversity discovered by circumnavigating by bike on average 30 to 45 miles daily. Routes can be tailored to individual needs and goals.

"We do confess to one problem," says Starnes. "The guides we send over to escort our guests have a habit of never coming home." But it's these guides, now with island-living experience under their belts, who escort these trips." They also provide the insider's knowledge about local eateries and a recently repaved road from Waimea to Hilo that Starnes calls "a fabulous option for serious cyclists."

Two styles of travel, "Classic" and "Casual," follow the same cycling itinerary and share many features. The primary difference is that "Casual" bike trips take advantage of budget-conscience accommodations and restaurants. Both tours embrace cycling on banyan-lined roadways passing lush coffee plantations and immense lava fields pummeled by surf. Guests hike into the volcanic moonscape of Kilauea Iki's crater and embrace Kilauea's secrets in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. "Classic" also includes cruising on a luxury catamaran to a private bay for snorkeling.

The rate for the Classic Hawaii option is $3,395 per person, double with departuresJan. 26, Feb. 9, Feb. 23, Mar. 9, Apr. 20, Oct. 12 and 26, Nov. 9, 16 and 23 and Dec. 26. For more information, visit http://bicycleadventures.com/destinations/hawaii-bike-tours/Hawaii-Classic-Bike-Tour.

The rate for the Casual Hawaii option is $2,595 per person, double with departures onFeb. 16, Sept. 28, Oct. 19, Nov. 2 and Dec. 27. For more information, visit http://bicycleadventures.com/destinations/hawaii-bike-tours/Hawaii-Casual-Bike-Tours.

On a "Family" adventure the itinerary is tweaked to appeal to youngsters who bike on safe and scenic routes, hike to hidden jungle waterfalls, witness lava pouring into the sea, explore a volcano's crater, enjoy a catamaran cruise snorkel with green sea turtles and myriads of rainbow-hued fish and splash in a giant thermal hot spring overlooking the ocean.

The rate for the Hawaii Family trip is $2,695 per person with departures Apr. 13, Aug. 17 and Dec. 27. For more information, visit http://bicycleadventures.com/destinations/hawaii-bike-tours/Hawaii-Family-Bike-Tour.
