DON GIOVANNI - MOZART FESTIVAL OPERA comes to the Times Union Center's Moran Theater on Saturday, March 20, 2010 at 8:00PM for one performance only!

Don Giovanni is an opera in two acts with music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and with Italian libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte. It was premiered in Prague on October 29, 1787 in the Estates Theatre. Many billed Da Ponte's libretto as a "dramma giocoso", mixing both serious and comic action. Mozart focused on the work as an "opera buffa", blending comedy, melodrama and supernatural elements.

In the story of Don Giovanni, a young nobleman is met with defeat in three different encounters after a life of amorous conquests. First, Giovanni comes across Donna Elvira, a woman whom he has deserted but who still follows him. His second defeat is with Donna Anna. Don Giovanni tries to rape her and kills Donna Anna's father, the Commendatore, escaping afterwards, but forcing Donna Anna to postpone her marriage to Don Ottavio. And finally, the third encounter is with Zerlina, whom he vainly tries to lure from her fiancé, the peasant Masetto.

All three women vow vengeance on Don Giovanni and his terribly beleaguered servant Leporello. Elvira alone weakens in her resolution and attempts reconciliation in the hope that Giovanni will reform. Don Giovanni's destruction and deliverance to hell are effected by the cemetery statue of the Commendatore, who had accepted the libertine's invitation to supper.

Mozart Festival Opera, the sister company of Teatro Lirico D'Europa, made its U.S. debut in fall 2003 with a highly acclaimed production of DON GIOVANNI. Important critics raved about the outstanding cast of singers as well as the excellent, detailed stage direction and attractive sets and costumes. The company subsequently completed a very successful fall 2004/winter 2005 U.S. tour with DON GIOVANNI and LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, and toured the United States again in winter 2006 with DIE ZAUBERFLOTE (THE MAGIC FLUTE) in the original German with English super titles projected above the stage, staged by Prague State Opera's Martin Otava.

Mozart Festival Opera recently completed a fall 2006 and a winter 2007 U.S. tour with DON GIOVANNI and DIE ZAUBERFLOTE. The mission of the new company, which uses the same orchestra and chorus as Teatro Lirico D'Europa, is to provide a touring opera showcase for American and European operatic artists together and to present the operas of Mozart in a traditional setting, much the way that Mozart himself presented his operas. All of the soloists are professionals with international experience who have performed major roles with important companies in the United States and Europe.

DON GIOVANNI - MOZART FESTIVAL OPERA will be performed at the TIMES UNION CENTER'S MORAN THEATER on Saturday, March 20, 2010 for one performance only. Tickets range in price from $30.50 to $80.50. Discounts are available for groups of 10+, 40+ or 60+ by calling (904) 632-3228.
